Don't overlook the Akebono pads. Virtually no dust, decent initial bite. Seem to be very e-z on rotors.

Where are you seeing Akebono pads that fit the Q7? Nothing shows up in their web site's application list.

Went with Hawk LTS and like them at 12k miles very much...the first 500 miles were the full break-in period IMO. I have very little dust and GREAT stopping power and I am hard on brakes as I drive fast and live in hilly terrain.

I also changed the rotors at the same time to drilled/slotted cast iron.

Hi,

I had an appointment at the dealership this Friday and I also did a tire rotation while there.
They told me that i have 5% left of my brakes on the front and 10% left on the back and that i need to change the rotors too. I asked what the rotors were measuring but they front desk guy said he did not know.

I told him that as I know the rotors should last up to at least 45-50k miles. He just said that this is how Audi recommends it and that is how they do it. He asked at the service if they resurface rotors and he came back saying that my only option is to change both brakepads and the rotors.

Here is a breakdown of the price list:

WTF is wrong with these people? I have 20,100 miles on the dashboard and I DO NOT own a freaking money printer! x(

So i decided to wait out the break change light and then do it myself without changing the rotors. I will measure the rotors to see how much I have left but again 1mm/side (2mm total) seems to be very little for how thick the darn rotor is. I've read that people are at 60k miles and they still have the original rotors on.

The specs are 36mm when it's brand new and then you have to change it at 34mm. Is this correct? Why is that difference so small compared to the overall thickness of the rotor?

Until that time comes I would like to make a decision on what brand i should get.
The options for breakpads that people mentioned the most, are:
- StopTech
- Pagid
- Brembo
- Hawks

For me stopping power is the most important thing.

I am leaning towards the StopTechs. Any disadvantages when it comes to the StopTech break pads? Do they pose any difficulty compared to other breakpads when it comes to installation?

I used Power Stop Ceramic for my A8L ($57 front), no squeals, no noise, inexpensive, very little dust, great stopping power. I'll use them for my Q7 when it's time come. It's 36k miles and still original brake pads, mostly highway driving. I do drive conservatively.

Rotors do not necessarily last 45-50k. Depends on how you drive. Look at your rotors and see if there is a lip on the outer edge...gives you an idea of how much has worn. While I believe the rotors could/should last at least 2 sets of pads, a dealership will err on the side of caution and recommend a rotor swap anytime they see a lip on the rotor. They will not resurface them.

I plan to go with Hawk LTS pads on my next service (I average around 20k between brake services which seems about average for most folks on this forum) hoping for a reduction in dust, but retaining oem stopping power.
