520miles on one tank in TDI @ 74mph
Drove from Ely,NV yesterday to L.A. basically cruise control at 80mph. had to of course slow for small towns at 25mph, road construction, etc. but then held 90-100mph on the long straights where i could watch for police.
was really doing well until miles upon miles of headwind. also vegas to L.A. goes from 4k down to 900ft, back to +3k, up and down. i REALLY just wanted to get home!! test was second. had 50 miles to empty when i hit home.
car was loaded, loaded including back luggage carrier off hitch totally full

Nice! I drove up to Tahoe with 4 passengers and a few hundred pounds of gear in the tailgate and on the roof and made it from San Diego to Carnelian Bay on a single tank. Actually had some diesel left - was probably closer to 560 miles and up 395 so over a few passes and tons of elevation gain. I held about 77mph most of the way so I've no doubt that 600 miles is possible. Coming home I filled up in Reno and still had a quarter tank when I pulled into my drive back down here in San Diego.

I ran 75'ish and got 560 out of the 3.6L.
I want to see someone crack 700 miles out of the TDI.

See this thread of mine way early in my ownership. If I had continued I would have cracked 700 on this trip. Hand calculated mileage was over 29mpg. In September we drove out to Vegas and did get 713 miles out of a tank. It actually is quite easy to do.

What I have noticed after two long haul trips in the TDI is that the fuel gauge reading is not directly proportional to the amount of diesel in the tank - or so I suspect. I also was calculating a 700+ mile range around 1/2 tank, but watched it drop faster as I got closer to empty. In the end I had about 600 miles of range. This was over a lot of mountainous terrain with a large case on the roof and with the AC running hard across the Mojave desert. 700 miles on a tank may well be possible, but I wouldn't believe it on my car until I actually got 700 miles on a tank rather than extrapolating the range left on a partial tank.
As far as mileage going up in the beginning of a tank - anyone know how Audi calculates range? It seems to me like it's based on recent consumption.

I figured that triple digits and headwind was affecting it. it's cool to hear about the 700 mark. i doubt i'll ever do it since i seriously can't do that many miles w/o hauling ***. it ain't going to happen.

It became a quest to get the best mileage, staying in middle lane of three to avoid mergers-exiters, accelerating modestly, holding cruise speed even though it tore the *** out of me! I will say now that I know it can do it I drive 70-77 or so. I'll suck up the few extra dollars.
