Towing with a Q7
Hi im new to the forum and looking at a Q7(2011 - current)we have a caravan ( 26.5ft,2800kg) which we tow often. we do not do any real 4x4ing so the need for a dedicated 4x4 is not needed (we just need the towing capacity and 7 seats)we have shortened the list down to a land cruiser and a Q7, the disco 4 is not that appealing to the eye as far as the wife is concerned. my question is
does anybody currently tow with 1 and how do you find it. i would prefer the Q7 over the landcruiser apart from the obvious reasons but my work is 600 km from home and the Q7 should be a comfortable long hauler plus the landcruiser seems too cumbersome and is thirsty once you hook something on the back(brother in law has a 2012 cruiser which goes from 11 l/100km to 23 l/100km when he is towing his van (2200kg). any thought good or bad are appreciated

I tow a Kimberley Karavan (ATM = 2 Tonne) with my 2010 Q7 3.0 TDI without breaking a sweat. Fuel consumption goes up, but that will be the case when towing with any vehicle.
Just be sure to install a brake controller.

thanks for your reply. you have a nice looking rig there. im not sure why we dont see more of them on the road towing in Australia. they have 24mm more length in the wheel base and 13mm more width in the track than a toyota landcruiser so i would suspect they would be very stable platform to tow with.they are comparable in price. maybe the landcruiser is the 1 dimensional default option if people are to tow heavier loads?

Nice, your set up looks the business. is your 4.2 a diesel or petrol (gas)? what sort of weight would you usually tow around in the trailer. if you are towing regulary do you thinks it excessivly effects the mileage you get on your tyres and brakes.

Towing
Petrol. I probably have 700 lbs of equipment inside. I attempt to along with the brakes to use the transmission in manual so not using the brakes themselves to slow the vehicle down. This helps save the brakes.

Our TDI Q7 tows better than my 5.7 liter Toyota Tundra did too.

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but I know there is an approx. 1000lb difference in towing capability if the Q7 had the OEM tow package installed at the factory vs. installing the OEM tow package after delivery.
I guess the difference lies in the additional cooling of the transmission?
Anyways, for those who bought the Q7 used, how would one know if their tow package was installed at the factory?

You could go to suncoast parts and for $10 after you give them you VIN they will email you the factory list of everything that came factory on your vehicle. Mine has the factory Adaptive Suspension which has a tow mode that levels the car as to the weight of the tow. Don't know what it's like without this suspension or if you can get without!
