Default SQ5 Issues - 2019

In November, I bought an SQ5. Early on I had two issues, the check engine light came on when I started the car and would stay on for a short time and the gas mileage was poor. I brought the car in and was told that the key didn’t have an record of the issue and with regards if anything the car was overturned and I just needed to drive it more. For the last 1,400 miles (currently 2,800) I’ve drive the car mostly on long trips, in comport mode and using cruise and am averaging 18.1 mpg (not the car reading, my own calculations). The check engine doesn’t seem to come on anymore and may not be related, but seemed strange. Has anyone experienced something similar and what did you do?

Side note, when I brought the car in the tech told me the rotors were really pitted and seemed surprised it was a new car. Suggestions on how to handle that situation would also be helpful.

Thanks.

I have a 2019 Q5 premium plus which I bought in the middle of Decemeber. At about 1100 miles my check engine light also came on. I took the car in and they had to replace the N80 valve. i just got it back saturday and so far so good. My check engine light never went off before the valve was replaced so not sure its related to your issue.

FYI I have a 19 SQ5 with 2000 miles and last week we took it from Chicago to Milwaukee. With stop and go driving averaged 26.5 mpg. Something is wrong with your car.

What is the pressure in all 4 of your tires?
What gas (brand and octane) do you use?
What speed are you cruising at? Much traffic?
The mileage will get better with more miles, but you should be at 24 mpg at least on cruise.

using ultra 93 (winter), tire pressure was checked when I brought it in, running the standard all seasons, cruise speed is between 60-80, limited traffic, best ever mpg was 21 with nothing on and cruise.

Your SQ5's highway mileage is very low.

Something is definitely not right, as you've stated. I wouldn't presume the CEL is related.

You'll probably need to put 10k on it before they can stop claiming it's the break in period - which is possible. I was getting 25 mpg on my SQ5 right off the bat and it went up 2-4 mpg by 3k miles. My mpg is unusually high - but only illustrate that you might gain 2-4mpg during your break-in 3-5k miles.

After 7k miles, if you're still having the poor results, I'd start going up the chain seeing if anyone will take it seriously. Service Manager, GM, AOA. You've bought a new $60k+ vehicle and it is not living up to published specs. Gas mileage is possibly reflecting something more seriously wrong. They could start tracking timing figures - dealer must have diagnostics to attach to the OBD2 port while you drive.

Just drove to Florida from NY. I got 30 mpg at 65 mph at one Point and usually 28 or so.

I generally get around 28-29-30 on the freeway with cruise. On our long trip last summer to Montana and Colorado, up and down mountains, through cities, interstate, we got 27.

You might want to check out the Fuelly website. You'd see the range of mileages folks get with your year and model. Granted that it is a very small slice of owners, but it might give you some guidance.
BTW, the 18's and 19's are identical, so it might help with the observed universe.
