Default Snow screen/Strainer?

So changed my air filter out yesterday and in the video I was watching the guy also took out the Strainer / snow screen. Figured I’d do it since it looked simple enough.

is there no screen on these newer Q5’s (mine is 2018) as I could not see one at all.

it also looks like in the front of the grill there is a blank/filled space where the air intake starts, so maybe they redesigned the front to not need the screen?

Never heard of a snow screen before. We don't get much snow here anyway, and when we do I just stay at home.

not sure why it’s referred to as a snow screen, basically it’s a strainer/screen to keep stuff out of your air filter.

See end of this video. Last 3 min or so.

I live in the "great white north" and don't have on on our SQ5. It's just the scoop into the filter housing.

I've never opened up the Audi airbox to see how they do it, but my BMW doesn't have a strainer, but has a flapper valve that gets sucked open gear the exhaust manifold if the air filter got plugged with snow to suck in hot air to melt it off.

Thanks, good to know. I think what happened is that they changed how the air intake and front grill were designed, and now have a blank/covered area where the exhaust manifold intake is, so the issues of debris going into the air filter basket are greatly minimized.

I just replaced my air filter after 90,000km, and outside of one leaf and a bit of dirt, it was really clean.

But was curious as the videos I've watched seem to mention Audi Q5's through 2019, but maybe it was the SQ5 as I think that design didn't go to B9 until late 2019?

In fact even the top cover that needs to be popped off to get to the area is different from the one in the video, doesn't have the push pin design anymore and is not as wide.

Thanks for checking.

Good point. Mine is a 2018. It looks like when I shine a flashlight through the grill, that the intake has lips to snap that screen on, but it isn't there. My intake tube doesn't have those "relief holes" like the video either (to allow air in should that screen get plugged).
