Yes, B-cycle GTIs were stalling from insufficient oil pressure at hot idle.
In all the brands of cars I deal with, I never heard a tech story, or from an owner that they were sorry they ran thicker oil when 20 weight was specified. 504 is a slam dunk.
I just bought three jugs of Valvoline XL-lll for $75 on Amazon. It's back to $40/jug now
