This is just *** amazing that my 2018 can now get current maps. Thanks @Moffacake for passing this along. Even through I rarely use the MMI maps - as AAWireless with Google Maps is my preference - I love having my MMI current and available for the rare times when I could be offline or whatever. Plus, when I sell the car, this is a good add-on.

I am very technically oriented (programmer, build my own PCs, rooted phones, etc.) yet the last thing I want to do is to brick my MMI by accidentally flashing the wrong firmware. The video Moffacake linked to has the MMI in non-English, Plus the link to the mibsolution.one site didn't bring up the same options as shown in the video (just lots of folders). I chose going directly to the Github repository and followed its instructions which were more to my liking. So, after having successfully gone through the process, I thought I'd summarize for those following.

NOTE 1 - Installation in the video is different from what is on Github and is shown below. The video appears to do the update through the GEM menu (I'm not positive since the MMI options in the video are not in English). The Github instructions I used (and which are below) auto install the patch as soon as the SD card is inserted.
NOTE 2 - I have a 2018 SQ5. From what I can tell, this will work for any B9 or B9.5.

Instructions:
I - Prepare the SD card with files
1a - Go to the following Github repository for links and instructions with very helpful screen prints to follow.1b - Get the M.I.B files (currently - V3.4.1 - "Backup Edition")1c - Download and install "Free Download Manager" (optional)
  • https://www.freedownloadmanager.org/download.htm
  • Because the downloads from mibsolution.one website is extremely slow (I tried downloading directly and it was going to take hours), I followed this recommendation which downloaded the patches in minutes. The Firefox addon didn't seem to work so I used the Windows version.
1d - Download latest patch collection (I pasted this link into Free Download Manager")2. Unpack the files
  • Unzip the M.I.B files to a directory (e.g. M.I.B._More-Incredible-Bash-3.4.1)
  • Unzip the patches files into the "Patches" directory which exists under the M.I.B directory in the previous step.
  • RENAME the file _Swdlautorun.txt to Swdlautorun.txt (this allows Automatic Install)
3 - Format a full-sized SD Card (FAT32) - 4 MB minimum
4 - Copy the contents of the M.I.B directory to the root of the SD card. Verify that metainfo2.txt is in the root of the SD card.

II - Install the M.I.B
  • Fully charge your battery. I kept my battery tender attached the whole time.
  • Turn on the power (without engine running)
  • Put the SD card in Slot 1 of your Audi
  • The installation will auto-start in about 60 seconds.
  • The MMI will reboot three times
1 - I missed the exact message before the first reboot - it happened quickly
After the first reboot, it said: "Waiting for devices:" then listed "LTE-ALS6.HD.Sdars"
2 - Rebooted a second time and showed the following screens:
SD card 1 =>
Loading meta info…
Update progress =>
Update 1/1
1 OK 0 N/A 0 NOK
Final Script 0%
3 - Rebooted a third time (I believe) and showed the following screen:
Device summary => (shows a long list of devices with only "Launcher" showing "OK")
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on "Resume" which will bring up the following screen:
Start log update=>
Connect diagnostic tester and start log update. Canceling will create a DTC memory entry and cause a restart.
  • Click on "Cancel log update" - MMI will reboot (I believe).
III - Enter Green Engineering Menu (GEM)
Enter the GEM,
  • To get into the GEM, you must be on the MMI home screen (Vehicle … Navigation … Map… Settings)
  • Simultaneously press UP on the right and left MMI buttons on either side of the wheel and hold for about 3 seconds until the GEM appears. If you didn't get it just right, you'll get either the Navigation or Media screens. Go back to the main menu and try again. It took me a few tries
  • Note: To go back to the previous screen within the GEM, scroll to the top and click on the "..." on the first line.
1 - M.I.B
  • There are two options at the top of the menu - choose the second one: =>m.i.b<=
2 - Backup
  • On the next screen. scroll down past where it says "NEXT SCREEN for more magic...". That next screen has all the menu goodies. Choose Backup_Restore and choose the backup option.
  • Keep scrolling as the screen fills up until you get the message at the bottom: "All done! Now you can go back…"
  • NEVER interrupt the process by clicking "back" (or removing the SD card) before getting the All done! message.
3 - Patch Image
  • After backup, return to the main =>m.i.b.<= screen
  • Choose the option "patch_ifs_root_aio"
  • Click on "Flash patched image | add FECs | CP/AA coding | and more"
  • Wait for the message
Copy FEC file from /patches/(name of patch) …
->Done :-)
Copy EL file from /patches/(name of patch) …
->Done :-)
Reboot Unit…
  • Reboot the MMI - Either 3 MMI button salute, or the reboot option in the GEM menu
=>Note: The above option "patch_ifs_root_aio" is an all in one patch. There are 3 other options below ir which do individual parts of it. If you accidentally choose one of them like "add_feccontainer.fec" (like i did), just go back after it is done executing and choose the correct option. You haven't screwed something up.

IV - Update Maps
1 - Prepare SD Card with map files
  • Unzip the maps file linked here (or future updates as we get them)
  • Rename metainfo2.txt to metainfo2.bak (or anything else)
    • This is only If you are using the same SD card and haven't deleted the existing files.
    • This is because the maps has a file with the same name and renaming keeps all the files from the first part intact.
  • Copy the maps directory into the root of the SD Card
2 - Turn on power (make sure battery is full)
3 - Navigate to the main MMI menu
  • Left click on the **** to get options (ridiculously obscure)
  • Choose System maintenance
  • As it is searching the SD card, you'll get a menu which says
System update => SD card 1
Searching for update data.
Please wait…
4 - You should get a screen which says:
Navigation database
Version 2022/2023 (or whatever is loaded on the SD card)
  • Click on "Start update"
5 - You should get a screen which says:
The update is being performed in the background. You can still use the navigation system and the MMI. Please do not remove SD card 1.
6 - The MMI will show the progress to 100% and you should get a screen which says
The component has been updated successfully.
Navigation database
Current version:
Version 2022/2023
Congrats!

V - Other goodies
  • VIM (video in motion)
    • =>m.i.b.<=
    • vim
    • Choose the option to "Set VIM to 199 km/h"
  • Dual Nav (with version 3.4.4 (or newer) - this allows Google maps navigation (or Waze) with MMI in the virtual cockpit (instead of compass).
    • =>m.i.b.<=
    • Navigation
    • navactiveignore
    • Choose the option to "Enable dual navigation"

NOTE: This link shows the MIB menu structure so you can get around.

Default How to

From another thread:

I have been wrestling with how to update the maps on my MY2018 (2017 build) Q5 since i got it Q1, 2020. The dealer and AoA have been less than helpful, only offering to do it for ~$500. To their credit, Audi of Birmingham offered to cover 50% of the cost but I did not think that was fair either.

Background:
  • Audi provides 2.5 years and 5 updates from the build date for free, in the MMI
  • If you are out of this period, you are supposedly able to get the last available update for free manually from myAudi starting Q2, 2021. This doesn't seem to exist at all. AoA and dealer are not helpful.
How to Update:
  • Access the red engineering menu and look for FEC details
  • You will see a code starting with 023 such as 02310022
  • This is the last map update code that your car will accept!
  • Find the corresponding map update for that code from the internet. Members here and on Audizine have posted these.
  • Download the ZIP file
    • You should have 2 folders (mib1, mib2, and a file named with that code)
  • Format a 32GB SD or USB drive with FAT32
  • Un-zip the package directly to the SD / USB drive
  • Hook it up to the car
  • Go to Settings -> Updates and manually update from the SD / USB
  • It will detect it and allow you to update
The downside to this approach is that you won't get the absolute latest update, but the latest that was available for your vehicle during that free update period. In my case, it was the 2019/2020 update, which is way ahead of the 2017 maps my car came with.

Hope this helps and I will try to add more details later.

Confirm radio model and region but I got one of my latest files from here:

Highly recommend patching your FEC to get "unlimited" future updates. Otherwise depending what your FEC code is and how far you can update this thread is worth a read:

If you could confirm your FEC code I can try and help you find the update files, otherwise these threads talk about "mibsolutions.one" website frequently, they have 2021 NAR maps for our vehicle.
If you do end up patching FEC I have 2022/2023 North America files on my OneDrive I could share.

Thanks for all the information, I already had download and installed the latest software 1316 p5087 and now was looking to upgrade my maps. Fec 02310026 is what I have to at this time I seem to be limited to 2020 21. how would I go about to patch the FEC ?

You can follow this video guide on how to install "MIB" which allows you to apply a patch.

Download for MIB Launcher:
https://github.com/Mr-MIBonk/M.I.B._...-Bash/releases

Quick notes that I wish someone told me before I attempted this:
  • Use an SD Card (I was trying USB) -> You MUST have an SD card inserted in order to access the MIB Launcher, otherwise when you hold the combination it will not open.
  • Be patient, you can brick your MMI if you somehow cancel or interrupt this procedure. (I risked it and did it on battery only with ignition on but people recommend having the car on, or using a battery tender)
  • You will want to download M.I.B_Patches from MIBSolutions. (Super slow download, this took me an 1-2hrs even on 1Gbps link)
  • The GitHub for VERY in depth guide if you want to research before you attempt, highly recommend: https://github.com/Mr-MIBonk/M.I.B._...do-stuff-smirk
Step 3 in that above URL outlines which patch you'll need to run which will include Android Auto, CarPlay, and new FECs (For Maps)
