Basically this:
And this with some wonderful commentary:
Anyone try these? Are they reliable? Is there a better way (aside from OBDEleven).

I purchased an OBD 11 for less than 100 bucks 4 years ago and disabled mine. You can also do a ton of other stuff with it.
I have the old version, but it will do what you need. I think it only works with Android, so your apple, you need to use a friends android phone or tablet to program the car, or buy the newer version for apple, but the apple ones are probably a bit more expensive. I have read you can't do as much with the apple version, but not sure.

Looks like a quick way to do it, but I agree with ribeye, and I would just code it to not do auto stop start. The OBDeleven does let me mess with alot of other settings too and reset stuff.

Did it on both B9's, amz too. I hate the *** system.
It's more than likely just a capacitor, but the premade one with the connectors just works.
edit: also if you use VCDS to code it off, it will only work with the AC system turned on. The amz module just turns it off regardless of AC on or off. You can turn it back on if you so desire with the module, but on startup it will be off (light on button on).

The dongle is far more effective than the coding hack. Many people have picked them up and used them. You can find threads about them in the B9 A4, B9 A4 allroad, B9 S4, and B9 A5/S5 forums. Don't know anything about the source link you reference, it's probably fine.

I went the coding route however this does not always work. The coding is 50/50 on sticking, I believe it depends on if your climate control is on/off since it's somehow tied to that module.
I bought one of those eliminators with memory function so it remembers the last state I set it in, 10/10 recommend, super easy install, has worked wonderfully. It should've came like this from factory.
I actually got the exact same one linked in the first post/comment, can't recommend enough, wish I did it earlier.

I thought it just toggled the switch, like asr on the mkiv gti, you can solder in a cap to toggle it on startup.
I stand corrected, I never tried to toggle it to pass through with startup memory, as I do not want ***, ever. Whatever it is, it works, and uses factory connectors, it's quite nice, and it works with the AC off
