AFS excess wear charges at lease end
My lease is up in in 4 months. I checked the tread depth on all 4 tires and three of them are likely to have above the required minimum 4/32” tread depth. One will likely be just under or maybe as low as 3/42.
I called AFS and asked if the inspection shows only one tire below the 4/32” minimum, how many tires will I be charged for. They said only the one that is below 4/32 as long as all 4 tires are the same brand/model and have the same speed and load rating, etc.
I am suspicious and fear that even if the inspector says only one is below the minimum, I will be charged for 4. Anyone know what AFS will actually do?
I have only a phone call response (nothing in writing) to prove they told me I would only be charged for one tire.
Any advice, etc. will be appreciated.

Well, when they turn the lease around and put it out on the used car lot, there's no way they will be able to sell a car with 4/32" tire tread so they are going to be replacing all four tires anyway. They have to have a guideline for when and how they charge you for wear, so if only one tire has passed that, that's the only one subject to the charge.
That being said, I've never leased a car so haven't had to deal with this and their "discretion".

I'd suspect you'd be charged for 4. You cannot put on one new tire with 3 almost worn out tires without causing issues with the AWD.

I blew out a tire a couple of years ago (sidewall failure). The remaining tires had around 7/32" tread depth. There are a number of vendors on ebay that will be able to match your tread depth and exact brand of tire. For $80 I would go that route.

How close are you to the 4/32" on the other tires? I found the OEM supplied tires on ours chewed threw tread pretty fast. Last season I had tread above the wear bars by 1/32", and 5 months later when I took them off they were 100% bald (I'm talking 0 tread left). Keep that in mind if you still have 4-months to go.
