Thanks everyone for the thoughts on this ... <3 the forum for broad range of info & experiences!
Esp to G Man ... I'll have to test this at home in my garage to see if I can reach my wipers to not cause any additional damage from dropping.
side note: it never got cold enough during work, as forecasted, for the rain to change to ice on my windshield where this came up.

The important thing is to leave the stalk in off position so they dont either attempt to wipe while frozen in situe or start wiping accross ice which scars them.
They will park up a little when its below 5 deg C anyway so the window defrost will unstick them.

Seems I recall reading that somehwere, so good point Jff !
but since it's been below that temp already - 40f or so -
guess there are other conditions to be met before it 'parks up'?
an mmi setting or wipers have to be on or ?????

Unrelated, but similar...I turn the feature off to fold the mirrors when locking the car in the winter. Too concerned the mirrors will be folded, it will snow/ice over, then start the car and damage the motor/gears/mechanism when the mirrors try to unfold.

Just another "ice trick"
Get some LARGE plastic zip-lock type Freezer bags and pull one over each wiper the night before. This will at least protect your wiper blades. Put the bags in the car and leave them there all season.
