Default Water pump went caput...

Yup... I though that initially was one of the hose/connection between the reservir and the engine, however, the rep at the dealership called today saying that it was actually the Water Pump and apparently there is a Recall or RVU that was just made public that addresses this issue, according to the lady.

So, long story short, it happened, and nothing major except for the scare tha that wife had when lights, chimes and steam started to appear. Called Audi Road Assistance and in less than an hour was on a flat-bed back to the dealership, loaner was ready and all, so, zero downtime really; service took less than a day (will pick it up tomorrow) and I'll post a scan if there is any indication of the exact problem/resolution on the paperwork.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, I am glad I change my water pump out before it broke.

Yes its a known issue and a known recall. The recall is by delivery date (or VIN) so not all receive the letter at the same time. Water pump housing on certain production was a plastic type. More recent production have an alloy version.
Sorry you got caught, shame on them 22-May-09 is quite a while ago.

Mine just went today . . . wanted to drive down to the gym over lunchtime and noticed a nice pool of coolant under the engine. Had the car towed and got a rental - bummer

Mine went last night. Had to wait over 2 hours for a tow. And it's starting to get cold around here.

same here -went out yesterday, the bad thing is you also lose PS, so it was kind of difficult to get Q5 off the road, wife could not turn the steering wheel at all.
She was lucky it happen just as she pulled out of the drive way, I imagine losing PS at highway's speed... really, Audi should have recalled all of them 3.2 motors w/ plastic pumps.

Wow another one bites the dust! This is a black eye for Audi. Question: Why/how would a failed water pump seal disable power steering? Did the drive belt get soaked w/ coolant and loose traction or maybe the belt came off?

It seems like the plastic water pump doesnt like the change in temperature. Have anyone here actually ask their dealer what fail on the pump? The seal or the housing?

I was told by the service manager it was the seal.
