Default Uh oh - suddenly an oil burner

On a 2012, 2.0T, for the first 10K (16T kilometres) did not burn any oil at all. Now at 11.5K (18T kilometres) and 1.5K since last oil change, we're down almost 1/2 litre (quart). Anyone have thoughts regarding why it would seemingly all of a sudden start burning oil? Seems like there haven't been any reports of oil burning in the 2012 models so I'm a little concerned.

My guess is that you switched to a different brand/viscosity.

Some brands/weights will burn where others won't.

That gave me some hope - called the dealer with the question and they insisted that they use Castrol 5W40 synthetic for all oil changes. Hmmm.... I wonder....

I know it's not a Q5, but it does have the same engine and transmission in it, our 2011 A4 2.0T didn't burn any oil at all until right around 18k miles. Once it started, it got really bad, really quickly. It would need a quart every 1500-2000 miles. Audi had no explanation why all of a sudden at around 18k miles it would start burning oil, when it had never done so before. Audi has a TSB out for the 2.0T engines and oil consumption. There is an oil consumption test the dealership can perform, and if the vehicle fails, the TSB instructs what parts to update/replace. We had our A4 done, and it stopped eating oil. I'd go ask about the oil consumption test at your service department.

Very good, thanks so much! To the dealers credit they did offer the oil consumption test but also said it could only be done twice during the warranty period so I'll wait till it seems worse than the Audi 1/2 litre per 1000 km burn rate before I go for it - they didn't say there was a TSB out for a high oil burn rate. I guess in that context it's still good news that they have a TSB that addresses the issue if it gets bad!

The piston jobs were for 2011 and older. All 2012 and newer have the fix. I work for Audi and I just ordered a Q5 and this was a concern of mine? Audi has fixed the issue.

Well, I guess we'll see how this plays out - I'll post here as the saga unfolds.

I am about to buy a 2012 a5 cab, and have been wondering what was done to fix the 2012 and later 2.0 motors. Can you please enlighten us?

Thanks,
