I've noticed the same in my '14 Q5 TDI at low speeds which is not bad but noticeable. It took time to get used to. I figured it was just a diesel thing...? I had an A4 2.0T loaner a couple of weeks ago and it didn't do that

While my car was in the second time( they did a driving adaptation instead of standstill) the 14' q5 loaner had the same rough downshifting. Shop foreman who was working on my car said it was #1 complaint he receives on Q5. Audi programs transmission to utilize engine braking when coming to a stop. Especially when stopping quickly. Creates the rough downshift.

I feel a little hesitation or the car trying to find the right gear when driving in town behind a slow car. No hesitation or shifts once the car is going above about 25 mph. Mine is a TDI

We noticed the same issue with our 15' SQ5. Downshifts are very rough. We'll be taking it into the dealer soon among a couple of other issues.

"Audi programs transmission to utilize engine braking "
And here I was, taught by a professional with many patents in his name, that "brake pads are much cheaper than rings and cylinder walls" so that engine braking was NOT a good idea.
