same problem with my Q5 2012 3.2L. (168k km). On cold startup, sometime i will here a rattle/pump noise for 20 sec or so then it stops. It seems even worse on winter days as it’s colder. I once took car to Audi and they kept the car for 3 days but it didn’t happen. According to technician he says what i hear is an air pump(?j which is trying to add more air to intake. is this possible? and if so what the fix.

I'm rashly guessing either there's a thermal valve involved with that pump, or the pump needs to be replaced. Hopefully they gave you a written diagnosis and estimate? Otherwise I'd guess rattling noises, like silverware in a dishwasher, were a more serious valve clattering problem.

If they kept the car for 3 days and it didn't happen, that may just mean they kept it indoors or a driver brought it into the shop, by which time the noise was gone so the mechanic couldn't hear it. Maybe keep it home, and on cold mornings open the hood while someone else starts the car, and try to capture the noise on your smartphone. Then see it the shop can make better sense of it.
