Default NY Times: EPA expands on the road emissions testing to all diesel models

Just read. Impressive. Should have been done on all cars regardless of fuel source.

Yes. Try to drive that through NYC. There would be a terrorist alert.

Can you imagine if they find out that all mfrs have been cheating? or better yet, all fuels (except electric)? Jeez, what a fine mess that would be!

I blame the EPA with its monarchic edicts "Throughout the land be it know that all subjects to the EPA must abide by royal edict to make vehicles that emit less than blah, blah, blah."

When the news initially broke, I thought that it was likely that other cars (gas or diesel) used software to enhance driveability which would translate into higher emissions on the road vs. EPA test modes. I thought VW's sin was to install software to deliberately cheat on emissions test. In the last analysis, I thought that it was a matter of degree. and VW was doing what others essentially did. I have not seen any rigorous real world testing results of other manufacturers. However, I have read about real world testing of one car,the BMW 6 cylinder diesel in the X5, which did ok in on the road testing. If this one example proves to be accurate, and applies to other manufacturers and engines, VW's problems are much worse than I initially thought.
