Thanks, I have had so much bad experience in the past with regular touch up paint in the past, I am planning to go with Dr. colorchip exclusively this time. Now my only question is, just get the regular version, or splurge with their top of the line kit and try their...

Since you have experience with them, what do you think?

Default I've done it "the old way" before, but that looks interesting

I can get a good look with their basic stuff, but the usual problem is getting it to stay in the chipped areas fully, both in applying it and then wiping it down. At least for applying it, the Squegee idea makes good sense.

I still suspect on a large scratch or one with out a supporting "side" like at your bumper panel seam, it may be hard to get their paint liquid to stay in there. That's when sometimes I have no choice but to use a brush on touch up paint, though I try to do that only in less visible places or right at door edges.

For deep scratches and chips, paint alone won't fill the damage and make it disappear. I have a tube of 3M red body filler paste that I use on those first. I wet-sand the dried filler with 400 grit sandpaper just in the immediate area of the damage, use Dr color chip to fix the paint, then use Griot's #2 polish to buff and blend. This also takes care of the fine scratches from the 400 sandpaper. I've become fairly proficient at making chips and scratches disappear.

Thanks! I have ordered the Squeegee thing and will look for a body filler. I'll post the results once I get it done--that is, if it turns up well and I am not ashamed of my handiwork!

I think this is very tough for a newbie (me included) to do right, so if it turns out worse than when you started, maybe Steppenaudi is willing to give you a hand since he seems to be from the Seattle area too.

I've also bought a set of cheap plastic painter's spatulas from Michael's to apply the red body filler paste. Small/narrow chips/scratches require small tools.

Just to let you guys know, I have not abandoned the thread

Dr. ColorChip might have a wonderful product, but I have yet to find out. It appears that my order sat at their office for almost a week before shipping out.

Once I have received and used the product. I'll let you know how it went.

Default Fix It Right

If it was my NEW $40K car I would have it fixed by the best body shop around. That is going to bug you forever. Get it fixed right. Looks like $500 to me. Sorry, my opinion. Touch up paint is for tiny "dots". Good luck.

I ordered my dr. Colorchip about a month ago for couple rock chips on the doors of my Q5 3.0T. I have to say this product works good on small chip but for bigger chips, its still noticeable after applying it. My point is its probably wont work on bigger scratches and damages and It took them 10 days to get that item shipped to me. I wish u the best luck.

I was thinking, since doing it myself doesn't cost much outlay, may be that's all I need. Even if I completely botch it and need professional help, I'd just be out <$100. But the fact of life is, cars will get dented and scratched sooner or later .

The last few days I have been thinking, if I just botch it a little, may be I can hide my mistake with some clearbra material--something I probably should have done in the first place. But now, well, you know, no time like just after the horse has bolted to close up the barn door, right?
