Dunno - hard to believe it would be free, but in the portable gps world the first map update was usually free since they didn't know how long it would be in the supply chain....
I just learned that at least the 2011 3g mmi is based on navteq so I emailed them and registered...

their email response:

Thank you for contacting NAVTEQ. At this time the release date of the next update for your 2011 Audi Q5 has not been officially announced. The maps that you currently have in your vehicle are the most up to date maps available at this time. If you would like to be notified when new releases or special promotions become available, please register with us at www.navteq.com/registration

If you need additional assistance, please send us your feedback by replying to this email.

I asked my car salesperson what the cost of map upgrades would be for the 2012 Q5 nav system, and she said that the nav is satellite driven, so the maps get updated through it for free.

That didn't sound right to me, so I clarified my question, and she again affirmed that map updates to the nav were free.

Fwiw.

Hah! My salesman said this too and I also asked the question twice. I chalked it up to him not fully understanding the nav system. No way the maps get updated via satellite. It's not a data connection per se, just needed to get it's location fix.

Thanks for the info JohnBoyToo, registered today. And I agree, I think the maps need a hard DVD update when they change them. The traffic and other stuff is through the Sirius updates, not nav.

I don't think our nav is dvd based like the past audis. I believe they have a hard drive now that will have to be updated by the dealer.

Agree it is probably hdd based, but would expect
(just like our pc's) a dvd or cd could update the maps on the hard drive)

If Audi requires us to go through them exclusively,

I wonder how that fits in with the laws ??

i.e. they could say we can only buy THEIR oil and THEIR tires ???

think that's part and parcel of the issue.... but we'll find out when an update comes up !!!

Exactly, hard drive based now and the maps are far too much data for our satellite interface.

My wife's Lexus with hard drive based Nav just got an update at the dealership.
