My car was delivered with the Michelins. Obviously I was attempting to induce a skid - the nice thing was the car went in a straight line! But under normal maneuvering, the tires grip very nicely - I have to go up a 15'-20' rise to get out of my driveway, slick with plowed-down snow, and the car went up it like it wasn't there.

Another drive up to the mountains this weekend. Actually got to see some good packed snow driving as we went into one of the upper lots for a little spin. Let me tell you the Q5 is one of the best handling snow cars I've ever driven, even having only all-seasons. I mashed up a pretty good slope with packed snow and didn't even feel the car slip. Only slip I felt was on a flat with me just gunning it and turning the wheel a bit. Even then, it was only a brief loss of traction and then I took right off. My buddies big ole lexus tank (GX470) with full winters didn't have a chance at keeping up with me.

The 20" Sport wheels are like running on a hockey rink in a pair of Nikes.

Default Snow Tire Setup

My Prestige S-Line is still on the water (scheduled to arrive around 1/8) but based on all the helpful info here, I have a set of MSW/Pirelli Scorpions on the way already so that there is no delay in getting up to the snow ASAP. $1,374 shipped. Will post pics upon arrival.

Default Sensors?

The Rack said I would not to buy sensors but instead that the computer would need to be "reset" somehow when I swapped wheels back and forth. Not something I can really check for myself since I don't have my Q5 yet...

The 2010 Q5's use the antilock brake sensors to detect abnormal wheel rotation and infer a pressure loss, so you don't need the pressure sensors used on the 2009's. I swapped out my OEM 19" for an 18" wheel & tire package from tire rack (I think the same wheels & tires as kleinbus). I made sure the tires were properly inflated and have not had to reset anything on the Q5.

Gotta love the Rack. They really know their stuff.
