Default Do I need Snow Tires with Quattro ?

Searched the forum, can't believe nobody has asked this or discussed it yet. 2012 Q5 2.0 Original Michelin Tires on it.

Thank you,

It depends on where you are and what you'll be doing. Quattro doesn't help you stop any quicker on ice than 2WD vehicles.

Denver, and I drive up to the ski resorts regularly, I think I'm getting snows. Probably a dumb question ...

IMO I would recommend if you are dealing with icy and snow conditions occasionally.. I found from using the OEM Michelin Latitude HPs for the first small portion of winter.. Quattro can unknowingly fool you into thinking it's not that bad out. Hooking up with traction with minimal wheel slippage, thus thinking to myself "oh It's not that icy out after all".. Then when it comes time to turn into curve or stop at the stop sign.. Quattro doesn't provide much participation in that aspect. So I bought the Michelin X-Ice-2 just to provide that sense of security with the turns, curves and stops.. not the acceleration traction. Although it's that much better with the Snow boots on the Q5 now.

Put it this way, you spend $40 grand plus on the car, do you really want to risk a fuge huck up because you skipped out on an extra three?

playadude: I'm the one who started that linked thread a few weeks ago. I did end up buying some aftermarket 18" rims with Pirelli snow tires, which I'm going to put on this weekend. All the research I did pointed to getting snow tires no matter how well the Audi handles stock. Also, price wasn't even an issue (aside from a few hundred bucks for the extra set of rims) because you're not putting miles on your summer tires while you're driving your winter tires, so you're just wearing each set down slower than you normally would. Of course if you want "Audi" center caps, then you'll be spending a lot more on the rims, but I think my aftermarket wheels look pretty good for 1/4 the price. I'll post pics on Sunday in my original thread.

I think you are mistaken, experts say different - on the ice not, but on snow yes
