Anyone looking into trailer hitches yet?
We're looking to add a trailer hitch for use with a bike carrier. We've never had to deal with this so I'm starting clean. Audi wants $895 plus installation. Local shop is recommending Curt brand and said they can do it for about $335 including installation once the manufacturer begins shipping the part in a couple weeks. Anybody familiar with Curt? Other options?

If you care about your car then stick with OEM as I have seen posts saying aftermarket stuff fitting is a bit off. I have been looking hitch too and so far dealer says they are waiting it and some says it will be available June-Jule 09?
I were looking European hitch to get moving, it is available but it is different structure and their bike racks attaches to the ball and not to square receiver tube as North America models.
It seems I have to suck up and just wait.... shame Audi!

OEM hitch labor $1700?
My dealer in St Louis said the labor to install the OEM hitch would be around $1700. That would be on top of the $845 price. I am certainly considering alternatives. My Q5 is due to arrive in mid-May. I too am mostly looking for this hitch to haul bikes.

Where is the edit button
Forgot to say with aftermarket brands like Curt you have to drill etc.
OEM goes into pockets on rear frame so it is more durable and gives you full 4.400 pound raiting.

Question regarding the hitch (ordered Q5, delivery in late June) - would the hitch be something that I can install myself, or does it really require installation? I don't (gulp) mind the $800 for the trailer hitch, but someone stated $1000+ for the installation I have a difficult time swallowing. I would have to assume that the hitch is basically a bolt-on since it is all OEM and built for it. Anyone install the hitch themselves, any opinion on difficulty level?
Thanks,
John

From what I've heard, the OEM hitch flips in/out and there's a red/green light to indicate that it's locked in place. apparently, there's an indicator in the dash as well - at least in the Euro models. Dunno about US.
What I also heard is that there are no loops for the safety chains for actual towing.
Hopefully, someone in the US can confirm the above.

Thanks for the info Kleinbus.
From the looks of it, the Q5 OEM hitch looks like the Q7 OEM hitch. There's a thread about someone installing the Q7 OEM hitch themselves... Prolly similar.
