Default sqeaking noise in steering wheel

hello all, i am not sure i am getting the same "notchiness" in the steering for my 2013 audi q5 3.0t but mine is a zipping/squeaking noise when i turn the wheel left or right that starts after having driven a trip of about 30+ miles from a cold start. i also notice that after this squeaking noise appears, the hood area is very hot to the touch so i am not sure if this has anything to do with the steering. this is a reoccurring issue as i have went to the dealers for this issue and i was lucky enough that during my test drive with the service manager, the squeaking noise came up and he noticed it himself. they replaced the steering column. i drove a 60 mile trip home with no squeaking noise. after that, the noise came back within trips of about 30 miles. going in again on the 20th and hopefully this squeaking noise will show itself during my visit to the dealers so they will know it is still there. i would like to know if there are many people who are having this issue. thanks

My 2014 SQ5 has no steering issues. Steering feels great on the highway and at low speed, and at all steering settings on drive select, though I prefer the auto setting. For what it's worth, my car has the Dynamic steering option that Audi bundled with ACC in the Driver Assist package.

I think you'll find that the 2013 build Q5's (the update) come with electric steering assist as opposed to the earlier models hydraulic assist. This would definitely explain why people with "2014" or post-update Q5's don't experience the steering shudder.

The steering update is applicable to all Audis that have electric steering. While it's possible that some 2014 models came from the factory with the updated software, earlier year models did not. As you said, the B8 chassis, including the A4/S4/A5/S5/Q5 started employing electric steering with MY2013 (the C7 series started with 2012). BTW, the issues didn't include a "shudder"; problems reported were wandering and some experienced a "notch" in the steering wheel. A very few reported an alarming, sudden pull and yet others experienced none of these issues or didn't notice mild cases and adapted to them.

My 2013 Q5 is scheduled for the update in two weeks (first break I have). The dealer runs the VIN and can tell if it needs it or not. When I asked him in an email about the Q5, he inadvertently checked the VIN on my 2014 A5 and said it wasn't needed. If the Q5 steering is as nice as the A5, I'll be a happy guy. <crossing fingers>

In my case it noticeably reduced the moderate wandering issue I experienced on the interstate but the electric steering is still not as precise as hydraulic - I still feel there's a vagueness by virtue of the hardware design that software can't overcome. I'm sure the technology will improve over the years but for now, it is what it is. Liveable but not quite there yet.

If it improves the wandering, I will be quite happy.
