2012 Audi Q5 - streaming music from iPhone?
Hi everyone,
I have a 2012 Q5. It has the 30-pin iPhone connector in the glove compartment. My iPhone is the 5S model, so it has the lightning connector.
I would like to be able to play music from my iPhone through the car speakers. If I buy the Apple "Lightning to 30-pin" adaptor, will I be able to do this?
Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) - Apple Store (Canada)
Thanks in advance!

If you don't want to spend the (considerable) money for the OEM Audi cable with the Lightning connector, the Apple 30 pin to Lightning adapter will work fine. Depending on which 30 pin cable you have, the only thing you might not get is album art display on your head unit.
Actually I just looked at the item you linked to. That cable might be kind of inconvenient to stuff in you glove box in addition to the AMI cable. I would suggest this Apple adapter It makes for a cleaner install.

Thanks! Actually I need the one with the cable because I don't think the one you linked to will work with an iPhone case.
So will the iphone just show up in the Media section, where the SD cards etc are? I don't think my MMI would display album art anyway, by the way. Must be an older model maybe.

You're probably correct about the case affecting the connector. I use an Apple leather case for my iPhone 6 that has the entire bottom open. If your case only has a small opening for the connector, that might be an issue.
You're correct - the iPhone should show up as a selection in "Media"

If you want an "oem" connector, I bought the VW oem on Amazon,
MDI Adapter Cable - Lightning Charger
MDI Adapter Cable - Lightning Charger $51.99
Qty: 1
Sold By: VW Parts Center
for my 2015 Q5 and it works well.

If he can't use the Apple 30 pin to Lightning adapter because of his case - he'll have the same problem with the OEM Lightning AMI cable. The connector on that thing is huge !

OK I bought the Apple Lightning to 30-pin adaptor and my iPhone now shows up as 'iPod' under the Sources section in Media.
However, when I play a song on my iPhone, the volume is almost inaudible. I have tried increasing the volume in the car and on my iPhone, but it doesn't help! The music is definitely playing, but its so, so quiet.
Anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

I'm using Tune2Air that plugs in to the AMI cable in the glove box to stream music on my 2014 Q5 from iPhone using bluetooth. It works fine although it's not as smooth of an experience as the MMI native streaming.
