Default IIRC, you may need to be at same version of VCDS software...

as when the earlier changes were made, or the files get lost if not separately copied. Otherwise, yes they are a good trail of documentation of prior tweaks.

Continued note to self: step 1 before modding a new vehicle--make a baseline copy of the entire scan w/ all the module codings and don't assume I'll just "remember." BTDT.

When you make a change, did you have deleted the old errors ??

Module for headlight range has nothing to do with fog lights

Default Did you manually enter the old codes?

Or is there a way to have the txt file/VCDS restore them automatically?

Default It's all manual

The files are just archival in nature. You basically need to compare the prior against the current side by side at the detailed coding level (up to the 32 digits/characters for some modules) and try to spot faithfully the changes.

Default Can you be more specific on what the issue was?

From one reply it sounds like it may have been around the cornering light feature. Was that it? And if so, do you already have adaptive HID's? Any other change that came up as problematic?
