This whole matter is ridiculous
I'm in the process of negotiating the purchase l of a Q5 Tdi Technik. In Canada that represents a 60k purchase. I've explained to my salesman that either they agree to include the nav update (2.5 years out off date) in the sale or I walk. This will be my 3rd Audi .At this price point and particularly given the Nav price of $3200 We shouldn't expect anything less. Audi are on a high right now but they got here because of us.They better not forget that. There are increasingly interesting alternatives !

Where do you access the screen on the MMS to tell me what version I have? So if the estimate that it might cost $350-400 for an update every two years the $15 per month for audi connect and google earth seems like a good deal for more accurate maps?

- Press the Setup button
- Press the top right button corresponding to the Settings option
- Navigate to the option Version
- You should see a screen which are displayed both version and Nav Software. database version
For 3G+ is a little different as it is setup button, find in Menu / Info

Audi Connect with Google Earth overlay (which is not a map) provides dynamically updated POIs but the base map is internal and is not updated unless done at the dealer. If a Google online destination is provided on a new street not included on the base map, while you will see a photo representation of the location in the Google Earth overlay, you will not be able to navigate to the address as it won't exist in the nav database.

@snagitseven. Thanks! So clearly the updates are essential. Is it true that updates cost $300?

Map updates from any dealer, any car line, are ridiculously high because they have the monopoly and can get away with it.
A Garmin or Magellan with lifetime maps usually has 3-4 updates per year and costs $35-50 more than a similar unit without the lifetime updates. So it is certainly possible to offer updates more often, and at a much lower price. All the rest is simply gouging because the maps come from the same sources and the car makers certainly can negotiate volume deals.
I'd like a built-in nav, but for $1800? less? you can buy a top of the line Garmin or Magellan or a nice tablet with cellular and live maps instead. In some places, the updates really don't matter. Many places aren't building new roads. In some others like DC and Florida, construction is ongoing and updates every quarter are important. Updates every other year? Would be worthless. Well, actually in DC I've seen ALL the nav systems say "Hey, you got us here, you get us out of here!"
