Default Big dealer estimate

Hi all, not new to the forum, but only posted about my A8 so far. This issue is with my wife's 2016, 100km Q3 S line. EPC and check engine light is on so I took it to the dealer. Has no power loss or drivability issues. Twice, it cranked longer than normal that's it. Estimate came to $7,447.69. That included 4 tires that I did not ask about. Looks like they want to replace everything instead of doing a proper diagnosis. Here's the estimate:

Diagnosis: 247.00
Fuel cap 174.99
N80 Valve replacement 1,092.93
Throttle body wiring harness 503.90
Turbocharger replacement 3,711.75
Pollen filter 141.15
Hatch trim clip replace 163.97
4 pirelli tires 1,412.00

$7447.69

I can look after the last 3 items, but seriously, turbo replacement. car has plenty of zip. I have no faith in this dealership. next closest dealer is over 2 hours each way. Any thoughts? My wife wants to trade it in.

What was the code that triggered the warning light?

Don't take old cars to dealers. Find an indie to help you out.

Sounds like they are hitting you with everything. I would get a second opinion but a turbo going out would generally require an in depth diagnosis or actually fail (I.e oil consumption etc) to determine it’s “bad”
The wiring harness is interesting. I would suspect you had some rodent damage perhaps? Did they show you why it needs to be replaced?

The EPC light came on with the check engine light.

I tried that first and got a bill for scanning for over $200. at a private garage specializing in VW Audi. He diagnosed a faulty gas pedal, which is wrong as I tested the output and it's smooth through the entire pedal range.

No, but picking the car up this morning. Hopefully they will have something concrete to show me. There is no loss of power at all, no smoke, so no bearing or seal failure in the turbo. To check the impellor, you would need to remove some hoses to inspect. I think it's a case of change everything and you can't be wrong. So far, the local private VW Audi shops seem as incompetent as the dealer. This is one of those times it doesn't pay to live in a small city like Regina. My wife loves this car, but we will probably junk it or trade it in.

one other option is to fix what you can yourself (i.e gascap and perhaps some wiring repair) and keep driving it. Unless you are taking long road trips it sounds like nothing is really broken in terms of drivability.

The gas cap makes no sense either. In the past, when a cap fails, you would immediately get an Evap fault. The wiring was "repaired" by the previous owner and I can do a pin test and check it out. N80 isn't crucial either, so I'll have to see what my wife decides to do with it. We both use the car around town and only use the A8 for trips, so the Q3 is really our main car. I may heed your advice.

I would keep driving it locally, and if you have no symptoms of poor running, ignore the EPC for now. It is unfortunate you don't have a second (or third) alternate local Euro specialist to try. If it is at all related to EPC issues we had with a 2015 Golf with 1.8TSI motor, it could be the wastegate actuator rod on the turbo. I am grasping with that suggestion, but you never know... (the official VW fix of course was a full new turbo)
