snow chains

I'd like to go to Mammoth next month and maybe Tahoe on December; then local the rest of the winter season. I don't think my tires will be ideal for the snow condition there. I got BFG g-force(less than 3 mos old) and I don't really want to shell out $460(firestone brand/shipping/install) for a new set of snow tires! So, what's the best snow chain out there?

none...never...ever.

Chains and quattro don't mix.

If they are the all season version of the g-force, then no problem.

If you bought the summer version of the g-force then winter driving is not a good idea and you should invest in snow tires or all seasons at the minimum.

Audi sells chain sets. I'm not sure if/how it impacts the awd system, but you can buy chains through your nearest audi dealer's parts dept.

why no chains on the allroad?

paulroad 10-19-2009 06:37 PM

I've been told by many techs and indys.....chains a quattro don't mix. Diameters, slippage, etc. A Much better choice is stuuded snows or good snows like a Nokian.

Thanks for your responses, guys!!!
Yep, the AR came with the almost brand new set of summer tires when I got em. Hey GARY of tirerack- any discount for audiworld members? Darn! It looks like my metallic racing stripes will be for next year's project. I've had it done on my wife's miata and it looks awesome!

So since we do not get a LOT of snow here in SoCal, I've decided to buy all-season tires and carry along the chains(for show-to the very kind CHP Officer):-( It will be my first winter trip to Mammoth Lakes and Tahoe.I hope these all-season tires will be good enough. What do ya think Mammoth skiers and snowboarders?? I don't really want to swap tires twice a year and spend $120 for the install.
We'll be there for a week. We usually go to Mt High, Sierra Meadows, or Big Bear.
Anyway, I am now selling my current BFG tires..see classified section pls.
Happy allroading everyone
