Stage 3, here I come!

It was uneventful. On the 2nd pull around 5.5-6K RPM there was a poof sound. We all thought a hose came loose, but after finding no loose hoses, I thought I'd take it for a spin and take some logs to see what was going on. I heard a little tinkling and a bunch of smoke poured out the rear. Yep, I got a visit from the turbo lady.

So either it was just time, or perhaps the oil wasn't up to temp when we started the dyno pulls. I didn't think to check the oil temp gauge when I pulled into the shop.

Not a big deal since I've got a whole Stage 3 kit in the basement, including ceramic coated headers, lightweight flywheel, new clutch, and AWE intercoolers.

'Bout time, Rob. It's only taken 5 years or so. ;)

Thanks for keeping track of the numbers guys.

Someone dare to post this in the main forum to see what happens?

AVANT S4 KING 06-24-2006 06:44 PM

I figure we'd discuss it here first and post in B5S4 on monday

I am very happy with my runs.

Based on my numbers, its very clear that the IPP intercoolers help reduce heat soak (and therefore help maintain power). With most of the other cars today, the numbers dropped notably after each run (especially on Joel's runs). I am also very impressed that my car only made 7hp less than a StageII+ on 100octane (scalbert).

I think that if we do post, we'll need to add some more numbers to it.

The temps were obviously cooler in the morning, which would help those guys (that's you, Steve, though it obviously didn't help Rob), and my first run was great, but they had the fans on my car for like ten minutes while they found the tach signal.
Sous didn't get any tach lovin at all, and as for pie4foo's first run, well, all I have to say is wtf. (Sorry Chris, I still don't know what your car was thinking on that one, cause.... wait, i do too know. I cleared your codes just before that first run. So, your car adapted for run two, and then I cleared the code between run two and three. Does that make any sense? Probably not. Someone send me to bed.)
Mbox removed his intercooler shroud grills, which obviously added five horsepowers, so we're going to just deduct five from each of his runs. Oh, and 116 octane is just freakin wrong in so many ways - if you were so scared of the stage 3- cars, you could have just said it.
RobC was well on his solidifying his record as the ultimate flogger of the K03 turbos when the turbo lady decided to visit. I think his car went out the way it wanted to go, though I'd have liked to see the end of that run for some comparisons. Kinda shows how much dps add to torque, though, right? I think Steve's IPPs, had they shown up, woulda really upped the ante.
Eric threw down the gauntlet for turbo consistency in heat while pimpin the IPP ICs while I showed how much the stock ICs suck in the war against heat soak.

Did I miss anything?

PS Kitt, I didn't forget *that*, but I'm just choosing to not mention it.

quickaudi:STFA 06-24-2006 06:54 PM

see my post above for my takes on it.

quickaudi:STFA 06-24-2006 06:56 PM

poof sound? sounded like an instant whistle to me. Either way, it was a quick and

instantaneous death. Turbo lady musta been busy somewhere else.

four door 06-24-2006 07:30 PM

i'll agree with that.

did it really get much hotter after noon? i dyno'd around 11:30 so it might have helped slightly. my number don't show too much loss from heatsoak (i'm on stock i.c.'s)

it was slightly cooler for steve's run, but i would think the 100 oct was what really helped his numbers.

i think i would have been most impressed with Robc's runs had he been able to carry out all three. torque on that car was impressive.

kitt...don't be scared. your car was clearly faster on 116, but we can talk 93 numbers later. (jab)

four door 06-24-2006 07:40 PM

yawn... start the fire already...but i can wait till monday.

as for stage 2+ cars...i'm still most impressed by Robc's. the torque numbers on that car blew some other similar cars out of the water. it would have been nice to see what it would have been able to do with some intercoolers.

but in a bittersweet way robc's been ready for stage 3 for a while. here's an early welcome to the club for you rob.c.
