Help, car suddenly died while driving, cranks, but won't start.
Hi everyone. This is my first post, I hope I will get some responses. I have a 98.5 A4 2.8 Avant. Engine suddenly shut off while driving - no odd noises or things braking - just as if someone turned off the ignition. I tried restarting the car. It cranks, but doesn't start. I get this fault code with Ross-tech VAG tool:
Address 45: Inter Monitor Controller: 4B0 951 173 Component: Innenraumueberw. D03 Coding: 00102 Shop# WSC06325 1 Fault Found: 01383 - Alarm triggered by anti-Theft sensor: Front Right 35-00 - - Questions: Can this fault be responsible for the car not starting? (i.e. is the car alarm not allowing me to start the car?) If so, how do I disable alarm, and/or fix this sensor (where is this right front sensor located?) BTW, I can arm and disarm the car with the remotes and all seems to work fine. If it is not the alarm, any other ideas? I thought it could be fuel pump/relay, but would not VAG show me a fault code if there was a fuel delivery problem? The Bentley manual has virtually no info on alarm system and I searched the forum, but did not find anything. Thanks, Jack |
No codes on the actual ECU? Can you connect to the ECU?
Do you have a GIAC chip (bad connection on ECU?)? Did you run out of fuel?

had same problem: 98.5 1.8tq, GIAC and... (long)
was chipped when I bought. Had for 6mo. and shut off while driving. this continued to happen a few times a over a wk but would restart sometimes and not others. I wasn't able to check codes back then (over 3yrs ago)
sounds same as my situation. sent my ECU to AWE, got it back, worked for 24hrs, few starts later and same thing! sent BACK to AWE, they resoldered the chip in and no probs sense. (I know the current owner) good luck!! |
More info: The car is not chipped. Bone stock. Full tank of gas.

Check your Engine module for Coolant Sensor errors. I know it sounds weird, but I had almost the same problem. Mine didn't cut out, but it would not start after I shut it off. Just crank and crank and started after like 15 minutes. It turns out it was the coolant sensor. At first there was no CEL, but after one day there was. I confirmed this with other info and posts. Since it threw a CEL it was covered under warranty.

Re: Help, car suddenly died while driving, cranks, but won't start.
The only fault code I get is regarding the alarm. I replaced my coolant sensor a few months ago (had that infamous erratic gauge problem). I also checked the ecu - all chips are soldered and intact. I am baffled. sounds like a tow to the dealer. Thanks for the replies.
