gear indicator display flashing

i have a 2004 1.8t, with about 7000 miles on it.

driving today as usual, not experiencing any problems, and i noticed that the Gear indicator display was flashing - not each letter - the entire thing, P R N D S...

The background would alternate red and black and the letters change, too.

Anyone have any idea what this is indicating? There aren't any other indicator lights on and the system check is normal.

Appreciate any help.

I had something similar, except mine stayed lit up for a while....

never found out what the problem was. It went away after about an hour.

Check the TCM for faults.

I had the same problem sometimes it will go away, the following code came from a scan

17137 17137.P0753 Shift solenoid A-N88:electrical

17134 17134.P0750 Shift solenoid A-N88:malfunction

it means the gear are not shifting, try to accelerate and look at the rev counter and if you can hear the gear shifts if you accelerate.

these can be fixed

(i)thorough flushing of gearbox oil
(ii)checking the + (red) terminal of your battery(do u see any acid leaks)--Change the battery as a bad battery can cause the solenoid to fail
(iii)check the wiring(insecure wiring can cause that)
(iv)Finally solenoid replacement

The car will still move but is not shifting gears

hope it helps

most likely you drove in a place with water and it splashed on the range control switch connector under the car, it probably will happen again check the connector and make sure is insulated is under the car on the left front side of the transmission
