CEL PO346 cam sensor fault

2000 A6 2.7T auto.
I already changed both cam sensor but CEL comes on after two key cycles.
Anybody got an idea. I hope it's not the ECM. But it looks like that's the case.
Talking about ECM's, Do I need to replace it with the same part number or can I use a different one as long as it's from the same C5 model. And do I need to have the dealer reprogram it.

Thanks

what is the CEL for? what code does it give you?

as for ECM, you can use a different one, but I'm not sure where the change points were, so a dealer would probably have to reprogram it

The CEL is PO346 which is a Camshaft Sensor Bank 1 fault, and if I keep driving it a PO300,PO301,PO302,PO303 code comes up.(cylinders 1,2,3 are bank 1) I think the first code is causing the misfire codes.
I dont think my coils are bad, coz what are the chances of all three coils on the same side going bad.

have you had any maintenance done on it recently?
maybe your cam adjuster is going out?

pipoluchi 05-04-2009 05:07 PM

Not really, so far just regular oil changes, the secondary air inj. pump went bad about couple weeks before this started happening. BTW the car only has 64,000 and the car doesn'nt run like the timing belt jumped a tooth. But i will be checking that this weekend just to make sure the timing marks are lined up.
Thanks for the cam adjuster idea, never really thought about that. Will be checking that also.

you'll have to pull the valve cover to check the cam adjuster

you haven't had the timing belt done yet?

pipoluchi 05-05-2009 04:01 PM

not yet, that would be my next big job, I figured I still have time with only 64k on the odometer.

what should i be looking for when i pull the valve cover?

I have a feeling it's something simple and not the ECM like i first though. coz the the 5 volt reference from the ECM, 12 volt power and ground are all good.

quickaudi:STFA 05-06-2009 12:11 PM

you'll be checking to see if it is at 16 and a half links

pipoluchi 05-08-2009 09:23 PM

I pulled the valve cover and found out the timing chain marks are off. It's about 14 links.
So I guess it needs a new cam adjuster. I know I need the tool to push the adjuster down.
My question is, Do I have to take the cams out to do the cam adjuster.

Thanks a lot quickaudi for your help.

quickaudi:STFA 05-10-2009 05:51 PM

no, you don't have to take the cams out

however, I'd suggest letting a professional do it, unless you're really knowledgeable about what you're doing
