Can i program a keyless remote to my A6?

I recently purchased a 1997 Audi A6 quattro.
I love this car and I was curious if I can buy the keyless entry remote and program it to the car even though I only have a normal cut key. did these cars come without the option for the fob remotes? In my owners manual it explains how to program the remote to the vehicle, but since the previous owner only gave me a single key I can't tell.
