Replacing xenon bulbs
 

I just attempted to replaced my HID bulbs on my 2013 Q5. I must said, it was a real bitch. Accessing the bulbs were fairly easy, getting the bulb off was not. Getting it back on, was pretty much impossible. I had to used pliers to get one side off. I was not able to get them back on the same way, unless installing them requires less force. I pretty much put the cover back on hoping the bulb does not come back out.

It's doesn't have detail image of the spider like spring that holds the bulb in.

Anyone else changed out the bulb yet? There wasn't much in the web on changing bulbs for our car.

Thanks for link. The steps to remove are the same for the 2013 2.0T with HIDs. But the bulb and spring that holds the bulb are different. I'll have to post a pic when I get to my laptop.

The carcare video is for replacing a conventional light bulb. FWIW, an HID system uses "capsules" not light bulbs. That's the industry terminology, and whenever you see someone telling you how to change "HID bulbs" that's a red flag that they may not really be familiar with the difference between real HIDs and something like "plain" xenon or halogen headlights. (A lot of unscrupulous sellers sell "HID bulbs" that have filaments in them, do not use ballasts, and are in fact just replacement light bulbs of varying quality.)

I haven't touched the HIDs in this car yet, but in the last one, the capsule was accessed by unscrewing a couple of screws that held down an aluminum retainer strap, then just popping out the capsule, which was seated with a high-temperature silicone gasket to ensure a waterproof seal. No forcing should be required, although the retainer (whatever kind) will probably exert a bit more force because HID capsules are usually very precisely positioned and then very tightly secured so that they are precisely focused.

Just wondering....

Why would you want to, or need to do this on a 2013 vehicle?
I'm assuming that since it's a 2013, the "bulb" shouldn't have blown out already.

And if by some fluke it was blown out, wouldn't it be covered under warranty?

bulbs are not covered under warranty, if you had purchased the car for like a few months. Some dealers would replace it for you no charge at all. its usually the igniters that fail instead of the bulb.

I do not know for U.S. market,in EU and ME is covered by the warranty, because they are not standard bulbs, xenon bulbs that are costly
Control unit are a problem in DRL for MY2009-2010

usually bulbs aren't covered. if the car was 1-2yr old dealers wont give you new bulbs. all depends on the dealers thou. if it is the control unit they will replace them. for light bulbs for interior and exterior its hard to convince the dealers to replace for free in USA. everything is money to them lol
