Brake Pad Questions - 6mm left??

Audi Dealership had a Service special day with free inspection. So took my car there and they checked everything including the codes and everything came clean. (I was happy!!)

They marked the brakes at 6mm left.. What does that mean?? I know my front brakes were changed at about 35K and the rear were changed at 43K.
So how long the OEM brakes are supposed to last??
Any Experiences ??? I am currently at 82K miles.

thickness left on pad - thirty-K miles is good out of a set of pads-URDue!

you got good life out of those pads....change them

BernieBenz 06-21-2008 08:29 PM

Come on, you fat wallet guys! 6mm = ΒΌ", only about 12mm new! Don't change them until they squeal.

WOWDee 06-21-2008 08:46 PM

Squeal like a pig!!! Oink Oink :) Or grind .... Is Min spec 5 mm? >

Agreed. They can still go a while yet.

Squeal, grind, both good descriptors. Unless deaf, you'll know when the pad's backing plate...

contacts the unworn annular rings of the rotor! IMO, the active wear sensors are inadequate and just a nuisance. I always cut them off and short out the wires at the pad connector at first opportunity . These active wear sensors only sense wear on 2 of 8 pads, whereas the passive sensors announce a wear limit for any one of all 8 pads. Another reason why worn rotors are superior to new!

Oh Yes the warning light has not turned on yet... Did you replace...

Pads only or Rotors too??? I have heard that I have to change Rotors everytime I change pads...???
What pads did you use and where did you buy from???

Maini 06-22-2008 07:14 AM

So you are saying I am only 50% done yet?? since 12mm is on New pads??

I have about 60 to 75% highway driving... Also I let off on the gas and cruise to stop lights to conserve gas.. and brakes...

Grapeking 06-22-2008 07:22 AM

Normally I'd agree that one would be deaf to not hear the grind; however, my recent experience

that led to this level of pad wear-out tells me that's not always the case - I never heard nor felt anything (and I'm pretty aware of these things). In tis case I was into the backing plate a bit definitely got my money's worth out of those pads.
