Emissions Control System light
So my Emissions Control System dash light came on in the W12 the other day, book says get it to a workshop asap but is there anything simple I can check myself first? I do have VagCom/VCDS and I've also read it can be something as simple as the fuel cap seal not doing it's job anymore.

So, if you have VAG-COM, what are the codes?
Read the engine module/ECU and report back. The W12 has both ECU 1 and ECU 2 so you have to read both. After you read them (and check in w/ any questions), clear both and see if it just stays off. If it comes back, also report on whether it comes back immediately, or only after a few driving cycles. Immediate tends to suggest a bigger issue; after a few cycles can be more minor like a disconnected hose, loose cap, etc.

Ok so I did a scan and these are the Engine and Engine II codes:

The stuff that threw up all the other codes I've not noticed any issue with them, could these all have come up in error due to the accident/battery going flat and probably being taken off the car for some days? Previous scan about 2 months ago only threw up a couple of issues that I already knew were there. |
Double post, I don't have editing rights.
Also I haven't cleared the codes yet due to the sheer amount of them and the warning not to unless they have been rectified. So figured I'd post the codes and see what people suggest first.

For starters, focus on:
the secondary air injection system codes. Those are common on D3's and Audis more generally, often arising due to a vacuum leak, an issue with the electric pumps that drive the system, or the connecting hoses. Here is what should be a parts diagram for it just to get a sense of what some of it looks like. http://www.jimellisaudiparts.com/sho...category=21737 The pumps (multiple on a W12) are tucked into the front fender areas and you can find them underneath with the belly pan off. If your car took a hit in the wheel area (I think I remember a recent post like that), this could be related. Consider returning to the shop referencing the codes here. A leak in this system typically takes two cold-hot engine cycles as I recall to turn on the light. I would be looking variously to be sure the pump electrical connections are in place, nothing is physically damaged and all obvious hoses are installed correctly, secure and uncut.
The camshaft code is a new one to me. Look at the count in the detailed read out. If just one, likely ignore it. If many, need to pursue it. EEPROM error also weird, suggesting a possible bad box. Again, low count ignore if running well and engine light stays off but high count needs to be sweated. Power codes--with a battery failure, you will have those all over the place. While you are somewhat reluctant to clear all, if it hasn't been cleared in a long time or is now all cluttered up, I would just tend to erase it all IF it is drivable now, and then re read if/once light comes back on again. Then you can just focus on current stuff instead of lots of background noise in old codes once in a while, power related, etc. As a guess, you will have the secondary air codes come back, and it will take a couple of driving cycles. Then see ideas above. Alternately as I mentioned, report back to the body shop since the secondary air system pumps are close in to the wheel area and could be related to the prior damage. |
Ok I will clear all the codes when I next get a chance, the multiple other codes all over the place were indeed all stating "Lower Limit Exceeded" and "Function Limitation due to Under-Voltage" and one of the other codes was the Battery Regulator, the Battery was replaced only a few months ago and if I don't use the car at least a couple of times a week the Battery will go flat:

Understood; battery
Understood/agreed on codes clear and then monitor more.
On battery, it shouldn't go flat in days. I can go weeks and still okay. When mine failed at about age 7 it no longer could go the distance--first it could only go a week or so, then days, then almost nothing. I got a new one, recoded and all good. Thus on yours, did you re code the car (or have it done) for the new battery? Some think its fine w/out any coding, but probably the general view/sense is the power management system needs to know there is a new battery or it doesn't realize the battery capacity is reinvigorated w/ the replacement. If you recoded and the battery checks out, you have some kind of issue if the car is discharging still w/in days. You might want to start looking around for codes and issues connected to something like that. |
When I bought the Battery I did try coding it however the make and model wasn't listed so I read up on it and it was said to just code it as a brand new version of what was on the car before. The old Battery I replaced was like yours 7 years old and did the same as yours, started lasting only a week, then days and then lucky if I got a whole day out of it. I was rather surprised when the new one wouldn't last a week unless it was used a couple of times, I have wondered if there was something left on draining it all the time but I can't find anything and I've even resorted to turning off all the interior roof/door open lighting. My car has the DVD system and headrest monitors so I wondered if the DVD system was remaining on but when I checked all led indicators on the changer were off although the small power leds on the monitors were green but the screens themselves off and when the power buttons pressed the screen come on the the led changes colour so I'm guessing they are meant to light up green when powered off.

On battery...
did you change the supposed battery serial # by at least one digit? The normal work around if you don't have an OE battery w/ a usable number.
