Timing Belt at 55,000 miles?
 

I have a 2008 A4 2.0 Quattro which is still under the CPO warranty. I brought my car to the dealer for a check engine light. They found a few faults and replaced some small parts, but told me that while they were in there, they noticed that the timing belt was noisy and suggest replacing it.

I was very suprised since the car only has 55,000 miles on it. They consider it a wear and tear item and won't cover under warranty. I appealed to Audi of America who said they would cover 15% of the cost of the timing belt, not including the other parts that are usually replaced at the same time.

Has anyone else had to replace their timing belt so early? What are people typically paying outside the dealership to get timing belt, water pump etc. replaced?

I believe the original schedule was 75K miles. Then there was a service bulletin issued saying that they recommend delaying T-Belt service to 110K miles!

So this would not be a wear and tear type of scenario...you're getting screwed either way: 1. They're asking you to replace it when maybe it doesn't need replacing, or 2. You're CPO and they expect you to pay out of pocket for something that should be covered under warranty.

They are saying it is wear and tear because nothing bad has happened yet, and anything you do now would be preventative. It's bull****. If you want them to pay, you have to wait until your T-Belt breaks, which means brand new engine for you.

Maybe word it like that and see what they say.

Its wear and tear because its a maintenance item, rubber belt. If they say its noisy I would not ignore it. 55k miles it may be, but its going on 6 years old, and you cant have 100% faith that the belt or rollers dont have any factory defects or flaws to cause it to fail prematurely. I have done 2.0T Tbelts at the 105k interval before with no issue, but if its actually making noise from the belt area get it addressed asap. Failure wont be covered by any warranty. You let that belt break they will laugh at you and you will be out minimum cylinder head worst case whole engine. They are not screwing you, they are informing you of possible failure. Do not listen to this guy ^^^ Timing belt is ALWAYS a wear item. Especially now that the dealer has it on file that you've been warned about it, they will have no sympathy if it fails.

Not sure I follow. It's a maintenance item at 110k miles, so why wouldn't premature failure be covered under his CPO warranty?
