'06 A8 timing belt controversy
Have an '06 A8 mfg'd in Oct '05, dealer tells me the change from belts to chains was made in July'05. They say my engine code is BGK so it takes a toothed belt. Trying to make sense of that. Is there a physical exterior difference in the belted and chain engines?
Thanks guys, Ralph |
Find a new dealer!
Pardon my French, but the person at your dealer is incompetent on the subject. F in Audi product knowledge.
To i.d. them, an easy way is just look for the covers where the belt is--about an inch and a half of various covers directly in front of the cylinder heads and then downward all around the front of the motor in various shapes. The serpentine fan belt is run yet further forward in front of those, as opposed to much closer in my the actual motor castings. I would have to look at intro dates, but the reference is likely to the C6 A6, which I think was probably the first one introduced with the FSI (non belt) motor among the 4.2's. |
04-06 timing belts are the same design and tooth and everything. 07 is when they started going to timing chains(no more timing belt).

2003 - 2006 came with BFM engine. They have timing belt. It is at the front of engine under the black plastic cover.
https://3.bp.blogspot.com/__kjL7rUis.../Audi%2BA8.jpg 2007 - 2010 came with BVJ engine. They have chains driving everything but generator. They are at the back of engine, so no plastic covers at the front. On the top of those engines you can find FSI, meaning Fuel Stratified Injection. https://www.carparts.com/roadtests/a...007/Engine.jpg |
It is definitely a BGK and has a belt. Although mfg'd in Oct of '5 they were probably using up belted engine inventory.
Any opinions on a good belt kit? Thanks fellows,Ralph |
No. They switched to BGK for MY 2007.
Edit: I should said BVJ. |
