Window Regulator Replacement
 

1995 Audi 90 4 door, all windows work up and down from the driver's armrest controls and their respective door switches except the rear right hand side. Took off the panel. tested the last 2 wire outlet that goes to the motor, i have 12v straight and reverse (when I try the door switch up/down) but the motor doesn't even buzz, sound or else. The cable is not out or undone, everything in its place, logically the motor is fried. Is the motor replaceable WITHOUT risking to untangle the cable or do I have to replace the whole regulator and in either case, does anyone have the complete stepwise procedure (tried to find it here and nada) ? Or is there an easy way to replace the whole frame (bolt out- bolt in procedure) without causing mayhem? Many thanks!

When I got my 90 neither of the rear windows worked at all. I sourced a rear right regulator first and went to replace it. I verified that the old one was not working and that the new one was by jumping them straight to 12v. However the new one didn't work when I got it all back together.

About 2 months later I did the same for the drivers side rear. Same deal. Old one verified to not work, new one verified to work.

When I got the drivers side rear back together it worked. Strangely so did the other side. I can only assume that there is some wiring connection from the drivers side to the passengers side.

I don't know if that helps at all but you might actually have to check the other side.

Thank you for the input, I will try that. Can you please elaborate the change procedure? Did you have to take the pulleys and the cable assembly apart, is it difficult, or did you just bolt out bolt in and repositioned the cables? I don't want to get the cable untangled because that's the end of my ability to put things back together. I have no idea where to start even.

You don't have to do anything to the motor. the regulator and motor are one piece that go in together.

First you have to take the door panel off...

Just take out the screws on the top sides of the panel and the screws behind the grab handle. Then you should be able to lift the panel straight up and over the door lock knob.

Next you need to disconnect the cable from the latch...

I think you may have to disconnect the door lock too but I can't remember. if you do - it's not that hard to figure out.

Once the door panel is off, you have to separate the window part from the door part.

Then, once the window portion of the door is removed, you can take out the regulator itself.

Remove the circlip (#2 in photo) and unscrew bolts #6 and #11.

It's really pretty easy to see how the window regulator goes on.

Rpair done. It really is a 7 bolt replacement situation. Extremely easy, looks and sounds like a drag but it isn't.

1. Remove 2 phillips screws at the top of the inside door cover.
2. Remove the 1 screw - lower part of the door handle (inside)
3. Pry the inside door handle O cover
4. Remove the two screws there.
5. Pull the door cover up and out (partially)
6. Remove the handle cable and disconnect the electrical sockets going from inside the door to the door cover.
in order to set the door cover free.
7. Remove the 2+2 six face bolts (2 on each side) of the door sill
8. Remove the door window, body,top black quadrant"(or sill) and regulator (all one piece) and set on a blanket
9. Remove the bolts from the picture and pry the half moon retainer holding the grooved bolt holding the regulator and motor assembly altogether.
10. Replace the regulator and motor with a new assembly (making sure the regulator is at the same position as the one you are replacing otherwise it cannot fit.
11. Reverse installation.

To answer the most important question, DON'T BOTHER GOING TO THE DEALER, FOR ME IT WAS AN EASY 1 HOUR JOB, THE DEALER WILL TAKE MORE THAN ONE HOUR, PREPARE AT LEAST 1,5 HOURS + THE PART, ANYWHERE BTW 200-300$. Audi really helped with the engineering, it's a bolt out bolt in thingy.
