Anyone considered using run-flat tires on their Q7?
 

I am in need of replacement tires and considering RFTs after buying a BMW that has them. All their criticism aside regarding cost and crappy ride, I consider them a real safety item. Sure, I can change a flat tire but that's not the point... people get killed on the side of the road changing tires by other drivers not paying attention not to mention my fiancee possibly being stranded (as she was with her Touareg when it blew a tire on the side of a fast moving freeway) and not feeling safe being or comfortable changing the tire on a 5000+ lb SUV where a air compressor is required to inflate the collapsable spare.

So, back to the original question. Has anyone used RFTs or considered them?

I haven't considered it until now. Since you put it that way though.......
 

I definately do not my wife and kids in that type of situation either. I suppose when we are ready for new tires (only 10K on them now) I will look into them.

Probably a stupid question but are special wheels required for run-flats?
 

I had them on my BMW Z4 and 645ci. No problems or regrets with them. I also was not bothered with the ride and it did not seem particularly hard.

not that I am aware of...
 

I know a lot of the BMW guys take them off and put regular tires on the same rims they took the RFTs off of.

no. didn't consider the x5 because of them. expense and lack of snow

decent ride but bad tramlining
 

I have them on the Z4 and the car bounces sideways rather annoyingly when braking over warped pavement (when slowing down/stopping at a red light).
I don't know if this is a run-flat thing or a BMW suspension characteristic but I don't get this in the other cars and I don't remember experiencing the same in any of the other BMWs I've driven (none had run flats though).

B.t.w., I just drove SF to LA and back with two nails in my two right tires without much pressure loss.
I don't think I'd choose to have run-flats but I don't drive much through areas where I'd be uncomfortable stopping. If I did I might reconsider.

If you do get run-flats, please let us know how they run.
