Instrument Cluster Removal Question
 

Hey all, recently joined the Audi community and picked up a 94 90 CS Quattro and the instrument cluster light that illuminates the speedometer and fuel gauge are inoperative. I tried searching to see how much of the dash has to come apart in order for the gauge cluster to be removed but didn't find much. Just curious if anyone has any info as to what needs to be removed.

It is actually pretty simply and the steering wheel does not need to come off.
Two screws under the steering cover to take that off, after that you have two screws that hold the cluster into the housing.
Tilt the right side towards you and undo the plug, then shift the left side for two more plugs.
After that pull it forward a bit and tilt it so the backside is now facing you and gently slide it out towards the right. The bottom of the cluster will now be on top.
It's tight but there is clearance between the wheel and dash.

Do note the two screws [gold colored] which hold the cluster in can fall if you are not careful and could be a pain to get to.

I use a magnet stick when they are almost out to hold them.

Not a bad idea to put a towel around the wheel area to avoid any gashes.

you dont need to remove the steering wheel, but you should.

you will scratch your cluster, break down the lips (where the two screws that hold the cluster into the housing goes) you will break down the pin of the air bag light socket when you want to remove it.

Since my screw driver has magnatic tip, i cant comment on this:

I saw 3-4 different write ups, yours is a nice one too, but all are were wrong how to remove a speedometer needle.

No fork, spoon (two) or house paint opener needed.
Maybe you can get away with those once or twice, but they are very close to destroy the speedometer motor drive axle.

4 counterclockwise turn will do it, holding the needle -carefully- at the center point.

This worked great, very similar to egp320i's directions but its nice to have pictures :) I'm at the point where I need to separate the gauge's from the case and it seems at the same point on the left and right side I'm getting some resistance. I circled the areas in the image below.

Anyone else experience resistance in the same spots or did it slide out fairly easy?

I found I didn't need to remove the steering wheel in order to get the cluster out. Removed it toward the passenger side of the car and it came out with no issue.

varia: great tip on removing the needle. I once broke one using the pry up method.

Agreed. I've broken a speedo needle too
