2004 Timing Belt Replacement Interval
 

I know the mileage interval is 75,000 miles (at least that's what I've seen.) My question is about any related time interval. I have a 2004 with almost 60k on it and the dealer is recommending I do the belt now vs 75k. They told me the time interval is 5 years or 75k miles. Any truth to that. As an aside, I tend to agree, that with the car being 9+ years old at this point, it is probably a good idea to do the belt so I'm not necessarily arguing, just wondering if there is an official time interval.

Continental calls it six years at the outside or sooner per mfr recommendation.

thanks jakematic. This is the document I had seen. It does not look like there is any time interval, although I suspect with a low mileage, older A8 it is probably not a bad idea to change the belt a little early.

Usually time intervals apply to vehicles that don't get driven very much. Rubber does dry out and start to deteriorate after time. So even though it might not meet the mileage interval it could just be old and need replacement.

Some 2004 A8s have been on the road for 10 years. If you think of the timing belt like a tire, even if the tires have only 5,000 miles on them but they are ten years old, they most likely are dry rotten. Timing Belts start to crack with age also. I would recommend the replacement by time.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I agree with popular opinion, which is that this car did not get driven very much prior to my owning it (had 44,000 miles on it when I bought it about a year ago). I'm going to go with the dealer's recommendation and have the belt, water pump, tensioners, thermostat, serpentine belt etc done all in one shot.

Car is currently in the shop waiting for two front struts to be shipped from Germany plus replacement of upper control arm bushings and sway bar bushings. Told me it would be 10 days at least. OK by me, they put me in a new A7 loaner...nice ride.

My Audi dealer accept parts supplied by the customer, if yours does too it may save you lot....
