1993 Audi 100 S fuel pump questions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1993 Audi 100 S.
165000 miles.
2.8L V6, Automatic, FWD.

Last weekend my Audi decided not to start then after 15-20 min it started then after that it hasn't started since. I've researched what it could be and signs point to faulty fuel pump/relay. Fuel filter is good and no fuel is getting to filter at all. I read that relay is located on far right side, under driver dash. It does click on when ignition is turned on for a few secs. To be sure, I manually engaged relay with cover off and still no start.

Now my question is what is the difficulty level of changing the pump on this vehicle? The tank does have to be dropped for this correct? Thanks for any advice!!

IIRC, there is a round access cover in the trunk that allows you to R&R the fuel pump w/o dropping the tank. SFTAs.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check that when I'm near the Audi again.

Is there a certain brand of fuel pump to avoid? Recommended? As long as the pump has a decent warranty I should be fine right?

I've found a "VDO" brand pump on partstrain.com for $114 + free shipping. It comes with a 12month/12k mile warranty.

VDO is probably the OEM supplier, so should be as good as the original pump.

The procedure is in the FAQ:

Before I bought a pump, I'd use a multimeter to make sure it's getting power. Have someone turn the key while you read the +/- leads. It should get 12V for a second when the ignition is turned on and while it's cranking, then nothing otherwise. If you're not getting power your pump may be fine.

Thanks for the link!! It'll help alot. I'm assuming the two wires in the pic in the write-up are the ones I test with a DMM? If they are which is pos and which is neg?

Thanks again for the help!

You want to test the two that connect to the pump itself. There are a couple others for the gas gauge that you don't want to mess with.

Sorry its been awhile since I replaced the pump.

The fuel pump did arrive from autopartswarehouse.com for said $114 price by Friday. Quick shipping.

Everything went ALOT easier than I thought.

Old pump had some bit of something stuck on 1/4 of the strainer though.

Hardest part was getting the buildup of dirt out around tank access panel, and getting old pump out. The access panel is a little small. lol

New pump went in without any problems. Car turned over once then 2nd time fired right up.

I did not use any special tools for this procedure.

Thanks again for the help guys!
