iPod storage (cold or hot extremities)
 

I'm sure there are threads about how to display album art via SD card transfer.

I find the easiest solution is to plug an iPod into glove box via cable.

My question is this. Has anyone had any experiences with failing iPod device when leaving in vehicle permanently in extremely cold or hot conditions? Does the unit fail?

I've had either my old iPod Video or iPhone 3Gs plugged into two Audis over 6 years in New England full time through all winter and summer temperature conditions and no problems - both still work fine. I suppose if you lived in Siberia or the Death Valley, the constant extreme temps could pose a problem.

Apple states operating temp range for iOS devices is 32 to 95F. Storage range is -4 to 113F.

It's not too unusual for the temp inside a car parked in the sun to exceed the 113F but it seems that iOS at least tries to protect the device if it is outside its operating range.

An iPod (hard disk) may have a more narrow range.

Good find. Thanks. Unfortunately it's not the answer I was hoping for. Live in the "frozen tundra" of Alberta and it's inconvenient to take in & out of the vehicle during extreme temperatures. Especially Audi requirement of glove-box. Guess I better slug it out trying to get music files transferred to SD cards. Could not get album art to show up via USB transfer to hard drive in X3. I'm doing some research i guess. Thanks again.

32F spec doesn't cut it. Picture from Friday morning. The Porsche gets the garage, so the Audi is parked outside. This was taken on Friday morning. I noticed that the DIS (top fifth and bottom third) turns grey for a few minutes until the display warms up.

Just plug it in and be done w/ it. I have used flash-based, well-used iTouches for six years in the A8. If it's flash, its no different conceptually than SD cards plugged into car electronics. The flash ones are also somewhat faster access in my experience than the old hard drive based ones.

Car has seen many a 100 degree day and Tahoe 6700 feet down to about 20-25 below when outside. Just works, plus old iPhones, iTouches are about dime a dozen if you get them out of dusty drawers, from the kids, etc.

While I can't speak to the cold weather, I used to live in Phoenix, AZ. I had an iPod in both my vehicles. Never experienced any issues at all. In the Q5, the glove box has hole to allow it to be cooled. This is an improvement over the console with no air where my iPods are usually stored.
