1981 2door audi hunk a junk.. free to whoever wants to tow it (LONG) (auditrippin?)

this piece of **** is going to get junked. which would be a shame because the body is actually in pretty good shape.

so here's the story:
this guy rob was seriously interested in the car. came down all the way from massachusetts, a 3 hour drive, with his wife who i'm sure had better things to do today. had plans of restoring the car, etc. i drove the car back from pennsylvania a while ago, no problems, drove the car last month for a weekend, no problems, drove it this morning before he showed up to pick it up, again no problems. rob comes, nice guy, pays cash in hand, transaction goes smoothly and off he goes in his 2 door 4000 coupe. audi gods were unhappy today as rob got about 5 miles from my place and the oil pump or something goes. mother F. so the car is bone dry on top of the engine, cams, everything. i don't understand, car ran fine this morning!! so a refund was given and off rob went w/o a coupe and with a probably less than happy wife. sigh.
went to go pick up the car after they left and saw it for myself, POS. still cannot fathom how a car can run so well for so long, and then when i finally find an enthiusiast to sell it to, craps out in such an extreme fashion.
attempted to tow the car back with another car and a huge motha of a rope i have, no problems with the rope and tow (had a friend sit in the audi to steer/brake, however a cop was less than impressed with the whole setup. got the car about 1.5 miles from home when he lit us up. probably the only guy you know who got an improper towing violation. $73 for that and the car is still NOT HOME! ()@#$&(#@%&@%(*%(# so mad. luckily i had thought to slap the license plate from the green audi on the back as the cop asked for the information (reg and insurance) from the brown audi. handed him the info from the green one and all went smoothly with that end of the shaft. breathed a sigh of relief

so that's where the story ends. the car is now a mile or so from my house in a parking lot with a note that says i am going to tow it soon. i'm going to get it home, tear out the seat covers (the main reason i bought the car). take some other parts and then this thing is sadly going to the recyclers to get crushed

i would love for someone to salvage it (auditrippin i'm lookin in your direction) however the engine is toast i'm sure, and it's an automatic. undesireable albeit smooth shifting. car is in awesome shape otherwise from what i can tell, however dont listen to me, once you get here to pick it up some major catastrophy will occur and wheels will come flying off in all directions..

Somebody save it!

If I lived out east and had the cash Id save that poor thing. Dont see many 2dr 4k's like that anymore.

You're in central NJ?

If my Ford wagon would start - I'd be really tempted.

That's really a desireable body style.

I'm up by the tappan zee bridge.

Is it a 5+5 or a 4-cyl?

AudiSport4000 05-29-2006 10:10 AM

Should be a 4cyl, since its an autobox

A bad day was had by all......

Not a fun day.

With the end of the school year upon me (I'm a teacher), general contracting a large carriage house, and dealing with other (stressful) family matters, I was hoping for a smooth day. It would seem that was not in the cards.

I had one minor close call when the thing died on a fairly busy street (nearly rear ended), but it could have been A LOT WORSE (do I hear an 18 wheeler changing lanes, anyone?!?).

John was cool about it. I hope I was civil when I was back at his house. I certainly wasn't happy and I was soaking wet from pushing the thing down the road into a parking lot.

He was also pretty intuitive about my wife (unless her displeasure was THAT apparent). She is usually very supportive of my hobbies, but did NOT want to be spending the day as we did on Memorial Day weekend! She VERY much wanted to go to the beach. Considering the way things turned out, she took it pretty easy on me.

All said and done, John didn't sell the car, was fined $73, and I spent $115 on gas for the two cars (had just filled the tank before it died), tolls, and a bite to eat.

What can I say? Bad stuff happens to good people.

I wish I was closer ...

Alpine 87.5 05-29-2006 07:24 PM

I wish. No truck, time or money to get there and pick it up.

I would really hate to see it get crushed, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. if you do decided to crush it I call dibs on the front and rear bumpers, trim and headlights.

I hoping to get down your way for waterfest to swap parts with Arpy and say hi to Jenn. I could pick up the parts then. Let me know, and i'll check around my area for anyone interested in the car.
