Removing clutch fan without special tool...

So I've pulled the plastic fan itself by removing the four little allen bolts and now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going remove the reverse threaded nut to actually pull the fan clutch off. I've looked around at some of the timing belt walk-throughs and they always say "I was able to figure it out by improvising". One said they used a little allen wrench to jam into one of the pulley's holes. I wasn't able to get anything to hold it as tightly as necessary.

Thanks.

allen key in the hole works great each time I had to do it

Do you stick the short end of the allen in and rotate the pulley until it hits a metal rib behind it

or the long end and then wedge it against something exterior to the pulley?

2nd.

long end until it wedges behind the pulley

I had to order a spanner wrench($12 shipped), and it was not reverse threaded. Broke stuff trying to

use other things. Ordered from www.slgtools.com

Are you talking the same thread? The fan thread is definately reverse

it's designed that way so that the fan doesn't come off due to pulley rotation.

How I did it.

I put a long thin screw driver (red line) between the tabs (yellow arrow) and through a hole in the pulley. There is an allan bolt (blue arrow) behind the assembly that screws into the pulley that needs to be loosened and removed. Hope this helps.

*sigh* I had a long and hard problem getting mine off.

*hehe* Everyone said it was going to be reverse threaded, but after I broke the first aluminium tab trying to get it loose by pushing the wrench to the right and slamming my hand into a bloody mess i decided maybe it went the other way. I broke the tab holding the allen trying to go the other way too. So I gave up and ordered a spanner wrench. Waited for it, and took off the long bolt by turning towards the drivers side quarter panel and resting the spanner wrench against the A/C pulley(?). That would make it normal threaded correct?

In the pic, i broke the little tabs that are supposed to hold the metal pin that is supposed to stop the pulley from spinning.

I assume the 1.8T fan clutch setup is the same as the 30Vs?
