timing belt replacement alignment help!!!
 

Hello, I need help with aligning the cam sprockets with the crank pulley/sprocket for a 92 quattro 100/v6. I am replacing the tensioner and I might have slipped a few teeth on the timing belt and I just want to make sure I have everything in alignment before I start the engine. Thanks!

Do not try to start the engine until you have verified that the timing is correct and that you can turn the crankshaft by hand two completed turns (720 degrees). This is an inteference engine which will bend valves if the engine is not in time.

You will need the camshaft holding tool to set/verify that the timing is correct. Set the crankshaft to TDC and insert the crank holding tools. Now loosen the cam sprockets (just loossen so that they can free wheel) and align the camshaft holding tool. Now tighten the camshaft pulleys and remove the crank shaft holding tool. Rotate the engine by hand two times (720 degree).

Hi, how do I know that the crank shaft is at TDC (power/ignition stroke)with the mark aligned? There is no distributor that points to #1 plug wire. The timing mark on the crank pulley could be at TDC on the exhaust stroke even with #1 piston all the way up. How do I make sure that the crank pulley is at the power/ignition stroke when the timing mark on the pulley is at TDC? I'm trying to make sure everything is in time with the timing belt off.

You will have to remove the cam sensor and use the crankshaft holding tool. This will assure that the number one cylinder is at TDC. The tool along with the camshaft locking tool can be purchased on ebay.
