Is there a thread discussing the performance of the TDI vs TSFI in cold temps?

TDI must be harder to start in cold.

Right. Which is why they use diesels all over Europe.

That is how it was with my 1980 VW Golf Diesel! but today's diesels are totally different (along with the fuel). I have drive Audi Diesels in France during the winter and there are really no issues - starts up almost instantaneously and is ready to run - not really any difference from the gas versions except you may notice the difference in sound.

I'm sure there are several members who have been driving their 2014 Diesels in the cold (especially after this weekend) who can chime in with good info.

Same here...only thing I've noticed since the temps have dropped is the engine takes a little longer (maybe 3-4 seconds) to fire up after you push the start button, but not a big deal. Glad I opted for the cold weather package w/ heated steering wheel this time around :)

Other than noticeably longer to heat up the engine, the diesel starts up very quickly and is a significant improvement compared to my previous V 10 S6 cold start. It's recently gotten as cold as -15° F and the car still started up without any issue. Actual performance still feels quite strong, I do not notice a difference once the engine is warm.

When I picked up the car from the dealer it was stored inside the garage, the diesel fired up instantly. Last Night it was -20C and there was a pause of 2-3 seconds after pushing the start button and before the engine fired up. No other noticeable issues in sound or performance between the outside temperatures.

The time it takes to warm up the coolant temperature to 90C is the same time it took in my last car (E90 M3)

I wanted to add to my above post (where is the edit button). Although the car is still being broken in, and I haven't pushed it hard, the noticeable torque curve of the diesel is awesome. Thing pulls like a freight train at low rpms. FYI RPMs are 110km/h are 1,400 ... and it still has grunt to pull without downshifting.
