How to break a new timing belt, long and sad: grab tissues or jaegermeister!
 

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/102289/audi_blown_engine_tow_dec_5_06_2.jpg"></center><p>Within a few minutes and a few miles after artguy's 2 blown tires, I had a complete engine failure. It's taken me this long to calm down, and get word of the prognosis.
As I was pulling away from a traffic signal, every warning light on the dash lit up, engine stopped, and I coasted to the side of the road.
Had it towed to my indy shop, and waited for the prognosis, which was failed timing belt roller, blown engine.
On August 8th, at 78K miles, I had the timing belt replaced by my indy shop, Too Quicks.
So when it broke, it was 4 months and 11k miles later (yeah I drive a lot).
What my indy shop is saying is that when they removed the busted roller, it had no internal grease in the fitting. They are saying this is a roller mfg problem, and they are going after them to pay for the repairs. The roller has a 6month/6000mile warranty, but they feel it should be within the warranty period. They didn't tell me the German brand name, and I forgot to ask, but apparently it has a good reputation. His concern is they've used this same brand on every german engine they've done, so he's concerned about others out there...
He has a list of 27(!) parts that have to be ordered/replaced to get my beauty running again, since the pistons kissed the valves.
My guy at the indy shop is very good, and I'm thankful and blown away that they're following through and going after the mfg on this. I should know the outcome by Friday, but won't see my car for a week or two...
One thing I mentioned to him was that I recommend their shop every chance I get, and it was nice to have K2Audi roll in there for his tie rod replacement the same day...whether it was because of anything I said, or not ;)
Well, gotta go find a rental appliance car!
Any opinions or insight about rollers and grease would be most appreciated, TIA.

Well at least the indy is stepping up to the plate. I would not be a happy camper if they asked me
 

to pay the bill.

Bummer! Sitting at 64k right now, planning to DIY next spring, makes me worried.

I know nothing about the parts situation other than at least your indy guys are ethical and doing the right thing! Good choice for you to use this shop.

Too Quicks...I should get their Phone Number &amp; talk to them at some point. Are they down south by you guys?

That sucks! Hope your Indy isn't an Outy (They're doing something about it?)

Wow, that is the second time that I have heard of that same failure.
 

A local shop had one fail after less than a month after doing the timing belt service on an '01 Allroad. This was about two months ago. Same problem, no grease in the idler roller. It was obvious when they did the postmortem. I saw the aftermath, and it was ugly with melted belt and dry ball bearings everywhere.

They replaced the engine with a very mileage used engine at their cost, but didn't think that there was much of a chance that they could get anything from the part manufacturer other than a replacement roller. They said in all the years that they had been in business, they had never seen a new part fail like that. The problem is, there is no way to see if there is grease in the part or not. My guess is that there are a few more "timebombs" like this out there.
