Denatured alcohol recommended to remove Rain-X from windows...
 

1. What is denatured alcohol?
2. Is this readily available at a drug store?
3. Anyone else agree or disagree with this advice.

I am convinced that the streaking on my front windshield and rear window are from Rain-x that I can't remove. Yes, I use Stoner's Invisible Glass.

All I have left to detail for tomorrow night are: vacuum interior, clean gauge faces, clean windows, wash and dry exterior, get stain off of carpet on back of rear seat, clean wheels again, wash engine covers (gently!), dust around dash top air vents. :) That's it. :)

...alcohol lamps? I would think you could get that umm wherever one can buy those lamps. =)

I noticed a product called No Touch (really heavy duty) Glass Cleaner...
 

at NAPA for removing really tough water spots, films and specifically their brand of "Rain-X". It needs to be rubbed in and hosed off.<p><img src="http://www.goodmangraphic.com/images/ttmini3.jpg">

You can find it in Home Depot or home improvement stores...
 

At the depot, its with the paint thinners, furniture strippers, etc. It is one of those truly amazing solvents. I use it to soak old metal hardward fittings, etc. Yes it can remove 30 year old paint and tarnish from a brass hinge, window lock, etc. with a good scrubbing. I've used it after stripping and re-painting old windows and it takes paint right off of the glass.

Three words of warning:

1) wear gloves - and be warned that after a half hour or so, it will eat through the disposable "buy 'em by the bagful" variety,
2) if it can take paint off of glass or metal, imagine what it could do to your paint finish (especially an unZaino'd finish ^^^^^)
3) they aren't kidding when they say "use in a well ventilated area"!!<p><img src="http://utenti.tripod.it/~the_simpsons_family/bart/bart5.gif" border="0">

wal-mart or target. What do you use to clean the gauge faces?

You do live up to your name...as for denatured alcohol,
 

it's the same as regular alcohol, but they add a substance which makes it impossible to drink it while not affecting the usefulness of the alcohol itself.
Denatured means what it sounds like: the removal of somethings natural characteristics or elements.

This came about many years ago because alcoholics used to drink anything they could get their hands on.

The other form of alcohol your thinking of is isopropyl, which can come in 91% pure form. That's what we audiophiles use to clean tape heads, etc., because unlike rubbing alcohol (only 70% pure), it leaves almost no residue behind.

Speaking of gauge faces, remember that the TT's gauge faces come with an
 

anti-reflective coating. You notice this by looking from an angle and you'll see red and green colors, similar to a coated binocular lens.

I have had a/r coatings on my eyeglasses for years, and there is one problem. Don't ever scratch it, or the anti-reflective coating will flake off on either side of the scratch, and this is very noticeable.

So, for gauges, use a wet cloth, or better yet, an eyeglass/camera lens cleaning cloth.

since I always get dizzy when I use the Invisible Glass.

OK, as long as we're discussing my obsession, here's what I have already done...
 

Dust all crevices with horsehair brush (from Zymol), wash all plastic/vinyl surfaces of interior with very dilute Zymol Car wash. Rinse them with fresh water and fresh sponge, allow to dry. Applied Zymol Vinyl to all plastic surfaces in interior. Applied Lexol Leather Treatment to seats and door inserts.

I also tested the Pinnacle wax on one side of my hood and touched up the other side that is fully Zymold with Field Glaze. I think the Pinnacle is a little shinier and feels softer to the touch. We'll see how long it lasts.
