Damn bicylists downtown - Rider blew through 2 red lights on Mercer
then paused till there was a break in traffic at Mercer & 5th (by the QFC in Lower Queen Anne) before riding through the red light. That is a pretty major intersection to be riding through a red.
I'm seeing more and more riders who are completely disregarding red lights.
One 1st ave in Belltown the other night, a rider had inched to the middle of the intersection, blocking our left turn because he wanted to cross 1st ave on a red light.
end rant

Didn't notice
I was turning left onto Mercer when he flew through the red light. He then continued to blow through the next red light and then the pause at 5th & mercer before running that light too.
Just a matter of time before he gets smacked by a car when he thinks he's in the clear.

I agree with you. I'm an avid cyclist, all about it for transportation, exercise, whatever...but when jackasses blow through lights like that and don't respect cars or pedestrians, it gives all bikers a bad name.

Why can't they wait like the drivers?
It will only encourage bicyclists to put themselves into dangerous situations while also creating additional hazards to drivers.
It should be very simple. If you're riding on the street, you act just like every other vehicle on the street. No special treatment just because you're a bicyclist.

Oh but they're bicyclist and they're super eco-conscious!!
so they deserve to have all sorts of privileges, including blowing red lights and getting in fights with car drivers when they don't get their way. Right?!?! I think we should let motorcyclists do the same thing, they're not too much bigger.

The requested yield to stop signs would be for all of Oregon
I've lived at a corner with a 4-way stop for the last eight years. It on one of Portland designated Bike Boulevards and a major bicycle commute route to downtown. The most close calls come from cyclists who run the stop signs and almost hit each other. When ever this happens, they politley apologize to each other. However, when they run the stop at the same time a car rolls through you'd think WW III was about to break out. It's one thing when you're a hard core all season bike commuter, but I see parents out for a family ride on weekends blowing through the stop sign with their small kids following right along.
