Default Water softener BT: How often should it regenerate?

The house we just bought has a softener & it's the first time I've had one. I'm sure it depends on water usage. There are 2 of us so our basic use is daily showers, & normal laundry & dishwashing.

I'm guessing every 3 days or so?

Default Your tank should have an indicator light when it needs more salt

I averaged more than a week with 2 other roomies.

Default Mine has a huge tank that holds at least 5-6 bags of salt.

I just got the owners manual on-line & am trying to figure out all the proper settings. It doen't really explain the best settings though. I guess I'll just leave it at the defauls & let it do it's thing.

Default first, i sell softeners....

depends on lots of things...

1. grain capacity
2. hardness setting yours is set on
3. water usage

if the grain capacity is say... 30,000 grains

and your hardness setting is at 20...

for every gallon, subtract 20 grains from the total capacity.

now, the softener will regenerate when 2/3-75% of it's capacity are used up... so we'll say ~20,000 grains can be used.

20,000/20gpg(grainspergallon)=1000gallons can go through before it regenerates.

avg person uses 75 gallons per day, so family of 2... = 150 gallons a day.

1000gallons/150 a day=6.667 days

in that senario it will regenerate every 6.667 days

usually they are preset to regenerate at 2am or something, so if it gets close to 2/3 it will prob regenerate that night.

Default don't fill it all the way up

that can cause a salt bridge in the middle which means it will seem as if your salt is fine, but really, no good salt is getting to the bottom of the tank.

13" of salt is ideal, but you can do a little more.

what brand of softener is it?

btw, 3 40lb bags is good amount to have in there
